    Worth a smirk:

"When other Christians make fun of Mormons for believing that the Garden of Eden was in Missouri. I say, if you believe that once there were only two people, and they lived in a big garden with all kinds of animals (and even the carnivores only ate plants), until they got kicked out because a talking snake with legs tricked the woman into eating magic fruit, "...and it happened in Missouri" is not where the story becomes silly."
"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Good one. I am of the opinion that the starting point of any discussion of religion is that looked at logically, every religion's stories are absurd. However, history tells us that it is the quantity of people that believe the story that make it okay, not the story itself.

Widespread social acceptance makes socially unwise to criticize it, but it doesn't make it any less silly sounding.

I've heard of of reddit, but it is blocked at work. I thought I read somewhere it was primarily a self-submitted porn site.

There is quite a bit of that but it is really just a massive discussion site on any topic you can imagine.

You're the boss! You can't blame it on "work."

4chan is that one person you all knew in high school who was crazy, but sometimes would do really cool stuff. But, mostly they were crazy.

Ha. You think I have any control over the network. As at most offices, the IT geek is truly the king of the castle. We are 100% dependent on an overweight, poorly dressed, antisocial, white male to function on a daily basis. I don't understand anything he does, and only get more confused when he tries to explain things to me.

Do Mormons believe that the Garden of Eden is in Missouri?

We do not know exactly where the original site of the Garden of Eden is. While not an important or foundational doctrine, Joseph Smith established a settlement in Daviess County, Missouri, and taught that the Garden of Eden was somewhere in that area. Like knowing the precise number of animals on Noah’s ark, knowing the precise location of the Garden of Eden is far less important to one’s salvation than believing in the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

I second this. It's possible to do the same thing with science as well: it's not hard to describe a scientific process so elliptically so that it comes out looking stupid. "See this dollop of primordial slime? Leave it alone, wait a few billion years, and, presto, it will create a Mozart symphony." That's not to say that creation stories and scientific discourse are the same ball of wax at all, but you get the point. The prima facie absurdity of a claim like that is not enough to show that it is in fact false.

No matter where you try to locate the Garden of Eden story it's going to sound nuts. I've always admired, in a Harold Bloomian sort of way, JS's audacity in unapologetically inscribing the American continent into the Biblical story. It was a pretty bold move. Same thing with Kolob. Why locate God anywhere? Well, come to think of it, why the hell not?

If in fact he did. Frankly, I have my doubts.
