Am I to understand watching that video that if you are Mo, you have to remain so or you will get kicked out? OTOH, you don't have to be Mo to attend BYU.
So I guess the key is to leave the church before you enroll.I'm like LeBron James.

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Luke Ashworth joined a different church.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostLuke Ashworth anyone?
Going atheist is different.

Somebody forgot to inform Curtis that religion is just a metaphor. Poor guy -- making life unnecessarily difficult for himself.

Really? When was this?Originally posted by Shaka View PostThere was a Benson scholar from my high school that left the church on his mission and was still able to return.
I'm pretty sure if you leave the church now--even if for another religion--you're out of byu. I read a big blog post where a BYU law grad discussed the issue with a bunch of byu administrators and while they had different reasons for the policy, no one denied that it was policy.

Then how did Luke Ashworth do it? If BYU is going to hammer guys like Davies, Unga, and Spencer Hadley for stuff, then they wouldn't have any qualms about kicking a no name like Ashworth out, yet he was allowed to finish out despite leaving the church during his time at BYU and joining an evangelical faith of some sort. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I don't know--i wasn't paying much attention back then. And honestly, I'm not now, except for that post I read a few days ago (actually, in connection with this video).Originally posted by The_Douger View PostThen how did Luke Ashworth do it? Right, it just seems there's some grey area in whatever rule people are claiming.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI don't know--i wasn't paying much attention back then. And honestly, I'm not now, except for that post I read a few days ago (actually, in connection with this video).

I'd be interested to know the exact stance. I knew a few people at BYU that were not part of the tribe, and I guess I always just thought you had to have an ecclesiastical endorsement from someone if you wanted to attend, no matter what you believed. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

Yes, there is such a policy. I don't like it much, but I understand the logic. I hope that they show some flexibility in application of the policy and I think the Luke Ashworth case is evidence that they do sometimes. Yes, he was football player but he was also very measured and diplomatic about his apostasy. Penfold on the other hand has been extremely public, vocal, and critical about the church and BYU. Just go check out his FB page and you will see what I mean."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I get the policy too, except that I think it should be amended to just let students pay non member tuition. I don't like mixing matters of conscience with secular ones. For the same reason, I don't think they should make a temple recommend a requirement to professors maintaining employment at BYU (Outside of the religion department, I guess. Of course, the structure and mission of the religion department needs to be overhauled too, but that's for another thread.)Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostYes, there is such a policy.
