Missionaries, don't call your companion your "companion"

So my Aussie companion answers the door one day and this guy asks if our landlord is home. He says "No, just me and my companion".

The guy at the door eyes perk up and he says "Oh, are you gay too?" and my comp says "Nah, mate." and slams the door on him.

From that point forward, my comps and I referred to each other as "associates".
Everything in life is an approximation.

ha ha. Companion is a pretty gay term. Associate is pretty gangster.

My BIL is serving in the Bay Area and it's an official directive from their MP to refer to each other as "friends" and specifically avoid the word "companion".

Shouldn't the appropriate term be Team Member? That seems to be all the rage these days.

I always made a point of observing investigators' reactions in sac meeting when missionaries or former missionaries would mention being "in a threesome" on their mission.

In El Salvador way back in the mid-70s, "companero" had a gay connotation. We were "amigos."
