    Large family size

This blog made me mad for some reason. This woman is 32 and has had seven kids in less than 10 years and apparently plans to keep pumping them out. She writes this blog about her reasons for doing so.

She notes that it's difficult and not an ideal situation, that having so many children is "less comfortable, inconvenient and harder for me to do"

    Missing from here reasons are:
    --I love being a Mom
--I feel uniquely charged by God and driven to do this even thought it may not be right for everyone
--I feel extra gifted with resources such as money or energy level or physical and emotional strength that make it easier for me to care for many children

    Her stated reasons:
    primary reason:
God needs bodies to send all his spirit children and there's such a backlog that He commands all women (unsure whether this is all women or just the best women) to have tons of kids to push these spirit children out
    secondary reasons:
It's hard as hell to have tons of kids and it provides a huge opportunity for growth for her

This is a hugely controversial issue. I come from a large family. I myself have more kids than the average American family, even more than the average Mormon family. Many of you do also. I think some Mormon families have too many kids and the kids get neglected and serious problems come as a result. But that's difficult to judge and has to be done case by case. I know of many large families that do adequate parenting to all their children and it's a positive environment.

I mainly don't like her reasoning. It's extremely self-righteous because she's taking a view outside the norms of Mormonism. In my sphere of influence of what maybe 500 families in my situation, I know only one that has had or is on the road to having as many kids as this woman (assuming she continues to pop them out and reaches double digits). In my parent's generation I know of quite a few families, but not in the current generation. And generally I think her reasons for having so many kids are terrible reasons.

Sounds like my accountant and his wife. They are mid-30s, have eight kids and have no plans to stop anytime soon. He's a good accountant, but they are strange people - I'm afraid some of those kids are going to be pretty messed up.

I really don't give a shit why someone says they decide to have a lot of kids. If they can manage to provide a loving, nurturing home and put food on the table, the more power to them.

EDIT: LDS demographics show that the average family size has decreased significantly in the past 30 years, so even if this was a problem, it's not as much of a problem as it used to be.

This is one of the most bizarre arguments I have ever heard (I think it goes back to Brigham, who wasn't always known for the cogency of his thought). I've always thought, well, if that's the case, we might as well sow the seeds far and wide. Come to think of it, we would in fact be under an ethical imperative to procreate as much as possible, even with non-spouses that might bring those kids into less than ideal circumstances. Because, assuming your legally and lawfully wedded spouse is tapped out, it would be better for kids to at least come into the world in non-ideal circumstances than to not come into the world at all.

Mostly agree. Except when their reasons imply they're better than others for their decision or that others should also be pumping out masses of children. And also their stated reasons might give insight into their ability to manage a loving, nurturing home.

Sure, and the church has also repeatedly stated that the number of children a couple should have is a matter of personal, prayerful choice.

I saw a billboard on the way to work today for the website http://smallfamilies.us/

"More time to play" it said, with a mom and a dad holding a baby.

The website seems to stress that "it's okay to plan," which I was completely unaware of, website. So thanks.

I am reading a book about the FLDS. Nobody can touch them when it comes to cranking out babies.

I would really like to understand this woman's thought process.

She states that the church says the number of children a couple has is a matter of personal, prayerful choice. Yet she uses as her primary reason to have a huge family the global/macro issue of this problem of all these spirit children needing to get to Earth. This is not really a personal decision. She clearly believes this is a macro issue that applies to all women in the world or at least the church.

I would like to know why she thinks the church says it is a personal choice. Possible reasons.
--this is a super secret doctrine and they are worried about PR fallout if they made it public but secretly they desire all women to have double digit babies
--this is a higher level doctrine. The general public would feel guilty about not being able to obey. Only the righteous that are super in tune hear the calling.
--church leaders are weak or have apostatized or fallen out of touch with God in this particular issue

IMO, God isn't especially in a hurry to unload all of the backlog of spirit children. Hell, he took almost 1,800 years before bothering to end the Great Apostasy. God's timeline and man's timeline are almost universally at odds with each other.

I am totally OK with someone having the number of kids they choose to.

What does bother me though is to see people complain about how lacking we are in funding education in the state. We spend less per pupil than others and so on and so on. Sometimes these people who are complaining are standing there with 7 kids. If you want to have seven kids fine. If the dominant culture in the state is for having large families fine, but take some responsibility and don't expect others to finance your choice.

I would vote for a head tax when it comes to paying for education.

It is much harder than I dreamed it could be to give each kid the individual attention and love they need. I really want to provide it for each of them individually and collectively, it seems nearly impossible to me. In reality I would love to add another kid to out family (ldc absolutely does not) but I know it would be way too much and kids would feel squeezed out even more than they maybe already do.
