  • LDS Online Advertising

I'm seeing tons of online ads recently for a copy of the Book of Mormon or to chat with missionaries. It bugs the heck out of me that I'm targeted for this--I guess they can't filter for the already indoctrinated.

Anyway, I"m not sure what I think of this. I guess it's no different from when I stood in a train station in Tokyo 30 years ago... But I didn't like that much then and maybe I'm thinking I don't like to see LDS ads all over the place when I'm searching the web either.

I wonder how effective this form of advertising proselytizing is...

I haven't seen any ads myself, but considering you can advertise online to as wide or narrow a customer base as you want, it would be very interesting to see what criteria was requested by the church in placing those ads. I also wonder if the placemet of those ads comes directly from the missionary fund or general tithing (I know that donation are now, and probably always were, fungible once given to the church)?

It would be funny if they placed them on porn sites.

In many instances, these ads will be fed to a browser based on the browsers history, and will not be placed on specific sites. So, unless there are restrictions--and this is one of the many reasons why some people are arguing for a .xxx designation for pornography--it's quite possible that someone could have an ad from the Church running while they are on a porn site.

I don't have a problem with that, either.

I guess I'm missing something. What don't you like about it?
