    Rally 'round the Youth...

Our YM Pres is a great guy. He spoke today with some of the youth in the ward. He was speaking about how we as a ward need to support the youth, when he uttered this gem: "To paraphrase the words of a great band, we need to rally 'round the youth with a pocket full of shells." My wife turned and gave me a puzzled, disapproving look and mouthed "Rage Against the Machine?" I guess she didn't think it was the most appropriate quote for sacrament meeting. I was just proud she recognized where the quote was from, I'm sure more than a few people were wondering what pockets full of seashells have to do with helping the youth.

Can anyone else come up with some churchy paraphrased lyrics from some questionably appropriate bands?
"In conclusion, let me give a shout-out to dirty sex. What a great thing it is" - Northwestcoug
"And you people wonder why you've had extermination orders issued against you." - landpoke
    "Can't . . . let . . . foolish statements . . . by . . . BYU fans . . . go . . . unanswered . . . ." - LA Ute

it's rally round the family, not the youth.

"I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

yet I am still perplexed by his use of that lyric... do we really need rally around the youth with a pocket full of shells? not diligent, but militant? dumb.

To paraphrase is to reword for clarity, keeping the same meaning as the original.

He wasn't paraphrasing anything. If he alters the meaning, from family to youth, then what he is actually doing is simply misquoting. Also, was there any need for clarification on that lyric? He wasn't expounding, either. What he should have said was, "to misquote the words of a great band...."

so to paraphrase, you are saying he made a cluster of good choices?

I guess if we're using paraphrase the way he used it, then yes.

I don't know, but our sermon today was titled Blinded by the Light.

I was present where a missionary once got up and bore his testimony at Christmas reciting John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War is Over)."

Two missionaries did an acoustic version of "Patience" by Guns n Roses at a zone conference. The Mission President was very pleased with their performance and wanted a copy of the sheet music so the elders could sing it at a mission gathering. It was very funny. I almost fell out of my chair when the elder told the president the song was written by "Brother Rose."
