When I think of how ugly the racial discourse in the Church would become, I can't help but be ashamed at how statements like this were ignored and/or forgotten.

It seems it is popular to take "politically correct thinking" in current times and then apply that standard to previous times.

Liberal thinkers do this all the time. Why were they so offended in how Mel Gibson's movie protrayed the Jews.

I thought it might be confusing. I will try, but not sure I will do any better.

Currently we as a society are far better at defining how race relations should be and what is accepted. Based on our current more enlightened and correct state, in my opinion, we look back at past generations and condemn how they were. While the acts can be condemned, I am not as sure the people can be because of ignorance as an excuse for them.

The Jewish connection would be that liberals I am pretty sure condemned Gibson's film for portraying Jews the way he did. However, wasn't he factual and thus why the condemnation. My guess is that it unfairly portrays how Jews are now.

I don't know if I did any better at explaining myself, but I tried.

While the contrast in descriptions between the "polished European" and the "degraded Hottentot" does make me cringe, I doubt it was out of place at the time, and I think it is nice that the message is that all groups, of any color, are welcome.

I think you are not recalling correctly. "Liberals" did not condemn The Passion of the Christ (I am not even sure what you mean by this). It was decried as Anti-Semitic by several prominent Jewish groups. They were speaking as Jews, not Democrats, Republicans, or Independents. And they did not "condemn" the movie as much as they complained about how they were portrayed...as being responsible for the Crucifixion.

It's a good point, byu71. Posters like SIEQ or SU are sure in their belief that if they had lived in the 1800's (or 1940 or whatever), they would certainly not have been racist, and therefore anyone who was racist during these times are terrible individuals who are doomed to burn for their racist beliefs.

This ignores the massive impact society has on each of us.
