What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Way to go Sister Dalton! It warms my heart to hear such words passed on to the next generation. I'm sure there were not a few young women who heard your message loud and clear.Originally posted by marsupial View PostDio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

I have a hard time criticizing Dalton because I know her daughter well and have always really liked her. But it's getting harder to give her the benefit of the doubt. This is the kind of stuff I would expect someone to say off-the-cuff--not in a prepared talk. And this isn't the first time she's said something like this.
The fact that she thought about this, wrote it out, likely reread and reworked it, and then still felt this was appropriate is really troubling. It's getting harder and harder to be excited about raising my kids in this church.
But wait! It hasn't been canonized! Sweet! At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Yikes! I'm sure many early Mormon women are turning over on their graves after that speech.Originally posted by marsupial View Post"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. She is a woman, so we can just brush it off and disregard it.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI have a hard time criticizing Dalton because I know her daughter well and have always really liked her. My life got easier when I finally realized that sustaining a leader does not mean endorsing the unadulterated horseshit that sometimes comes out of their mouth, even when it is spoken from a beautiful black walnut pulpit.Originally posted by marsupial View PostNothing lasts, but nothing is lost.

One of the great ironies (DH ruling requested) of our church is that the women of the polygamy era were much more liberated and had more influence and power within the church than women today do. At least in my opinion. We have regressed.Originally posted by Moliere View PostYikes! I'm sure many early Mormon women are turning over on their graves after that speech.Awesomeness now has a name. What an atrocious talk. That is depressing."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Are you speaking strictly of the church as an organization here? Or are you expanding that out to local stakes, wards, and even in their own homes?Originally posted by nikuman View PostOne of the great ironies (DH ruling requested) of our church is that the women of the polygamy era were much more liberated and had more influence and power within the church than women today do. Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

All of the above, from a certain point of view. 1800s Utah was quite progressive in spite (because?) of polygamy in all those facets.Originally posted by DrumNFeather View PostAre you speaking strictly of the church as an organization here? That's what i figured. I think I'd fairly adamantly disagree on one of them, maybe more, but maybe that's for another day.Originally posted by nikuman View PostAll of the above, from a certain point of view. 1800s Utah was quite progressive in spite (because?) of polygamy in all those facets."They're good.
