He wasn't. The policy that was leaked from the handbook states that once they turn 18, IF they disavow their parents' "lifestyle", they can be baptized. "Lifestyle" though, is apparently disavowed verbiage now with this new website, right? Since "gay" is actually an acceptable label.

Fuck if anything the church does with this issue makes any sense at all. It kind of reminds me of football expansion insiders on twitter. Just throw out something for everyone, even if you contradict yourself.

But maybe I'll take the glass half full approach to looking at this and call it a baby step.

It's been interesting to watch the church go from pretty much outright condemnation of gays, to teaching love and acceptance. In fact, this might be the first official church video where I've seen acceptance of someone being gay as a good thing.

The quote that blew me away was this:

"And once that hit me, the pain and the suffering and all of the jokes that I had told him, all the mean comments, all the times that I said something snide about somebody else to the whole family and him sitting in that backseat sitting there thinking, 'My dad has no idea that he's talking about me,'"

That's from the dad and would be good for anyone and everyone in the church to hear. Even in situations that are private, you can do tremendous damage with an intolerant viewpoint.

I really liked the video. I feel the same way as I did in the post-Prop 8 years when it looked like we were making progress as a church. I worry that this doesn't reflect how the Q12 feels about acceptance, however, and I worry that leadership will triple down.

I try to tell people all the time: the church is a collection of individuals so don't expect 100% consistency. I know for a fact that there was not unanimity in SLC over the policy change. We are going to witness a cultural struggle for a time, but the narrative in the video is the one that is going to prevail. Of that I am very confident.

I can relate to this. Telling jokes about homosexuals was just a natural way of growing up. Once I realized that I had friends who were gay, I developed empathy, and my whole outlook changed. It's weird to me how some people are unable or unwilling to experience empathy.

well, they did approve the video. having said that, I do wish they would come out in a forum like GC and say unequivocally that being gay isn't a choice and call for compassion.
