Do you really mean that. It is easy to speculate. Harder to know if you are right, but easy to speculate especially if you are observant when you are around people.

I suppose I should have said, "I don't enjoy speculating." People often have a hard time knowing their own minds, and trying to figure out what someone thinks about an issue usually ends in failure and offense.

But I suppose if I were more observant it'd be a more fruitful endeavor.

I personally find it impossible to speculate on what other people think... especially when we start reaching into the minds of a few million people.

You're right. They should have had everyone stand up who had done their home teaching that month. I think it would count if one of your families was in attendance.

The thing is, your suggestion is funny for the very reason I chuckle at the thought that all callings are equal. If everyone can do something, it is less impressive if only a few can.

IMO, less people can be diligent and effective Home Teachers than could be a Seventy.

Most of the founding fathers put up a front of being the unassuming leader who wasn't seeking after power. In the case of George Washington it may have been more than a front and he actually was that way, but it certainly wasn't the case with Adams, Jefferson or Madison.

The "all callings are equal" schtick is merely church leaders using the same ploy. I'm not so cynical that I think only 25% of the high level leaders are altruistic about the callings, but I'm not so naive to think that there aren't more than a few climbers in the mix.

I'll never understand that mentality as it applies to Church callings. What is the benefit to being a bishop or stake president or area authority? More meetings, more responsibility, more dealing with crap, and people respect you, I guess?

I thank my lucky stars every day I'm nothing more than a Sunday School teacher.

For instance I could speculate TEX and Indy differer in their opinion about BYU's honor code from how I feel. Could be wrong, but probably not.

Yes, that the was the cultural standard at the time. It was considered crass to campaign for office. You were supposed to let your people do that for you, all the while pretending that you had no desire for office but would humbly accept the position should the citizens see fit to thrust it upon you. That approach didn't last too long once the party lines were drawn.

Don't be fooled by Washington. Compared to the others, he stayed out of the dirty, behind-the-scenes politics, but he was as ambitious as anyone. Especially if you look at his early military career. He believed he was destined for greatness and cared a great deal about what kind of legacy he would leave behind.
