Although the project eventually failed, an interesting aspect of the Mormon church can be observed from this ordeal. That is, rather than receiving divine revelation directly from god as to how the church should go about performing its missionary work, the leaders of the LDS faith rely upon statistics and pilot programs to figure out what is effective and what isn't. It truly seems silly that a church which claims to be led by a "living prophet of god" should need to rely on empirical data in order to know how to best conduct itself. Instead of seeking heavenly guidance like an organization supposedly led by god should, Mormonism is "based on a sales model"7 like that of a corporation.

Missionaries don't need the Ammon Project to hit the strip in Vegas. An entire district of missionaries in the Vegas mission were sent home a few years ago for spending time at a strip club.

My business partner was a counselor to the Vegas mission president when it happened. He verifies the account as accurate.

That is very sanitized compared to the stories that I heard. I am uncomfortable sharing the stories as none of them are verified and, IMO, mission stories are rarely accurate.

That is very sanitized compared to the stories that I heard. I am uncomfortable sharing the stories as none of them are verified and, IMO, mission stories are rarely accurate.

There were some hints in there about the various ways elders had gone local. Mostly, it seemed that leaders didn't like it because it wasn't generating baptisms. Regarding that point, I explicitly don't care if assigning missionaries to give months of service at the beginning of their missions raises the number of baptisms. It's a way to serve our fellow man using time that missionaries apparently have in spades at the moment. That's good enough for me.

Interesting read. I agree with your conclusions. Service should be a common element, not raising baptisms.
