  • The Catholic Church in America

Xander's post reminded me of an article in the Economist a week or two ago dealing with Catholic Church finances.

Not all that transparent. Full of shenanigans.

I should be more clear. One of the people said it was a small congregation (Methodist or Lutheran type) where the pastor worked with a group of leaders from the congregation to run the finances. Everyone knew where all the money was going, how much the pastor made and how much was spent on charity.

I didn't ask but I bet they paid some to their overarching org. I imagine the larger the organization the more the finances become opaque. I don't expect the LDS church to open up everything but right now they don't disclose anything except charitable giving.

Sorry Xander. Didn't mean that to sound like it was picking on you. Your post just jogged my memory.

you should open the link, creekster. It's an interesting article.

          No need to apologize.

That article reminds me of the the financial markets where as long as times are good nobody cares about the shenanigans (CDS, insider trading etc) but when the tide goes out you know who's not wearing their swimsuit. As long as tithing and donations are coming in and no big lawsuits are on the horizon you can't tell how well the finances are being handles but if things were to get rough you'll find out pretty fast like the Catholic church did in some areas.

I expect the LDS church is actually run pretty responsibly and that they have made sound financial dealings but who knows.
