    Temple Protester reactions

When the TF temple had the open house we were lead a letter in Sacrament Meeting not to bs with protesters and not to confront them. And while outside the temple talking to people coming in member of committee said to leave them alone. Someone not realizing who they were invited them in before he saw there sign.

Does anyone get directions of how to deal with them. Best thing I think is not to raise as much as a middle finger to them. They won't keep the temple from being built and more baptisms result do to the open houses than the pamphlets they pass out.

When the Newport Beach temple was being constructed, our stake president walked out to the sidewalk where some of the rabble rousers were hanging and waving their rude homemade signs. He brought them folding chairs and cold bottled water. he stayed and chatted with them for awhile. He was being genuine, too. He wasn't trying to be a wise guy or taunt them. He was just trying to do good to those that hated him. A few weeks later, they were no more to be seen.

That SP was one of the best people I have ever met in my entire life. His example reinforced my intuition that contending with or taking offense at anti-Mos is a huge w.a.s.t.e. of time and accomplishes nothing.

As we left the KC open house this May, two antis tried to get us to roll down our window to take their literature. I ignored them. My daughter said they were giving us the stink eye big time.

Maybe I should have rolled down the window and partaken of their warmth.

I was 8 at the Seattle Temple open house and I remember asking my mom why all these realtors were holding signs and yelling in front if the temple. Looking puzzled she asked, "realtors?". "Yeah they're holding all those ERA signs. Why?" My parents had a good laugh.

I am curious to know who does this. I don't hear hear about the exmos I know doing it, but that is a limited sample. My supposition is it is mostly evangelicals. But I could be wrong.

TF had some clergy from other churches at the temple. I don't think there were many exmos. If I make it to Brigham City and Boise interesting to see some of them. I am sure a few exed people will be there too. Can leave the church but can't leave it alone.

When they were doing the open house for the Manhattan temple there were a couple of protestors. Clearly of the anti-Mormon stripe and not evangelical stripe. But they were also not your well educated exmos. Brian David Mitchell is more like it.

I know that SP well. He's always been like that, at least since college when we first met. He was my student ward home teacher and had an important impact on my life. An amazing man.

There are similar stories about the Houston temple open house.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Someone was mentioning to me that Ed Decker (Mormon turned evangelical) did this at temple square for years.

When I went to the KC open house, I wondered the same thing. None of the exmos I know in the area would bother with something like that. I think it's sad and pathetic. I went to the open house with a group of friends, but we were respectful while there, saving any sort of discussion for dinner afterwards.
