Is the LDS Church now resigned to its history?

Wow. This strikes me as big news. Am I right?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/03/bo...?smid=pl-share

More non-Mormons are also entering the field, which serves an “important legitimating function,” Mr. Bowman said. Among them is John G. Turner, author of “Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet,” a biography of Joseph Smith’s successor, to be published in September by Harvard University Press.

Mr. Turner, an assistant professor of religious studies at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., who said he “got sucked into the 19th century” while researching Mormons and modern American conservatism, expects the book will displease some people. In particular, he noted its sustained consideration of Young’s polygamous marriages, his complicity in various violent episodes, and other unpalatable subjects that previous biographers — including Leonard J. Arrington, a former church historian who was relieved of his post in 1982 after instituting a more liberal access policy at the archives — had brushed past quickly.

“Just the fact that Brigham Young swore with some frequency will ruffle some feathers,” Mr. Turner predicted.

Yet he said the church had granted him unfettered access to Young’s papers, along with almost every other document he requested. ”I think in general they’re pretty open to working with outside scholars who don’t show up with an obvious ax to grind,” he said.

Mr. Turner also cited the church’s increasing willingness to acknowledge uncomfortable questions about its founders. He pointed to the introduction to the second volume of Smith’s diaries, which noted that some of his 30-odd wives were already legally married to other men — a fact that has generated a cottage industry of research, as well as a panel at the conference in Calgary.
I predict a future long tormented thread about that BY biography.

I predict this will ruffle about as many feathers as dozens of people going for a hike up Ensign Peak did.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

        I laughed at that too.
I dont think he's quite the scholar of Mormon culture that he may think he is. J Golden Kimball is one of the more beloved historical figures.

I've been saying that this has been coming for at least the last decade. Researchers are too interested. The media is too pervasive.

These are just two of the factors that have been eroding correlated worldviews.

If they are finally going to be open about their history, you've got to feel bad for Michael Quinn and the other September 6 who were screwed over for being historically accurate.

And Quinn had his career ruined. Each time an endowed chair in LDS studies opens up at a (non-BYU) university, his name is at the top of the list but he gets torpedoed each time by the corresponding LDS donors. It's a real shame.

I was being facetious, but I also wasn't aware of that.
It seems like that kind of thing wouldn't be so effective at a non-lds university, but if so, that's really awful.

Pretty much every endowed chair in LDS studies across the country is backed by some LDS philanthropist.

Brigham Young's not that big of a deal. Everything rides on Joseph. A historian could rip Brigham to shreds, and at worse it just means the church got off track for a while. With Joseph, you call into question the veracity of the whole thing.

I know it's merely due to my ignorance and provincialism, but I'm surprised there are multiple endowed chairs in LDS studies at other universities. I'm also a little surprised, naively I concede, that a non-LDS university would permit a donor to dictate whether a person could be hired for reasons other than scholarship. I'd think they'd sooner pull the plug on the chair.

Here you go. This was from a 2006 WSJ article.

Although Mormon studies is a fast-growing academic discipline, Mr. Quinn -- a former professor at Mormon-run Brigham Young University and the author of six books on Mormon history -- can't find a job. In 2004, he was the leading candidate for openings at two state universities. Both rejected him.
At least three other secular schools plan new professorships in Mormon studies, but he appears to be a long shot for these posts, too -- not because he lacks qualifications, but because almost all the funding for the jobs is coming from Mormon donors.
"At this point, I'm unhireable," says the 62-year-old scholar, who lives with his mother to save money in this town east of Los Angeles.

That's a sad article, but also provides a bit more nuance. Still, very troubling, including this lousy quote:

Mr. Fulton, the donor, says he doesn't get involved in faculty hiring. He calls Mr. Quinn a "nothing person."
