Misuse of Church Funds

I'll take that bet. Make it lunch.Originally posted by The Rambam View PostIf there was no misappropriation of funds from one purpose to another which precipitated the change in the tithing slips, I'll buy you and your wife dinner at La Cai next time you are in Utah. (Do you live in Utah?)
While it is possible that they just decided to change the use of funds policy so drastically without needing to, I suspect something prompted them to do so. And it wasn't the still small voice, but the concerned tones of their accountants and lawyers.
In fact, let's do dinner regardless, and we'll let the reuters article decide who was right on this one and therefore who pays."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Someone for Y of I called me the other night saw it on caller ID told them I was not interested in the questions they were going to ask me. After that tell how Jacob Spori sacrificed to keep the school open and we should too. He left after three years.
I have donated before. Thought about it but didn't do it this time. My bishop up there was over donations. As for City Creek my understanding is that all came from the for profit foundation of the church. Keith who was released as counselor in PB is now in charge of that. I heard they put a percentage of profits into charity but of course bring some revenue into the church there as well. Not enough to keep it going for long.
Saints were told to build a hotel in Nauvoo. And prophet got to live there. after the split Emma And Brigham got in a bit of a fight over it I think. Brigham and some of his succesors lived in the beehive or Lion house I think.
Some prophets lived in HOtel Utah. Now Eagle Gate apartments though Tom still likes his old house as far as I know. Church did build HOtel Utah but I guess not as profitable as people found other places to stay so turned it into JSM building. So I think the business part of the church came for the time they built the Nauvoo HOuse.
People that don't donate why do they complain? I don't care how my nontithing donations are used. Maybe PEF is paying for itself now with interest rates. City Creek and other projects had them since the begining of this dispensation run by profits and how church uses donations from me it goes to a good cause I don't care.

If this post is any inclination as to the research that Reuters is doing (trolling mormon message boards) then the article may not be all that revealing.Originally posted by The Rambam View PostWait for the Reuters article.
Hi folks. My name's Peter Henderson and I'm a reporter from Reuters News. I've been doing some stories about the LDS church -- here's one about the church dealing with people falling away from the faith: http://reut.rs/xCcGs9. Now I'm curious about church finances -- how much money the church has, gets, and spends. I'm looking for everything from lists of assets (I've seen some on this site) to anecdotes. I welcome any help, from tips which I'd follow up to links/documents, which I could use after verifying. My email is peter.henderson@thomsonreuters.com and my phone is 415 677 2541, if you prefer to communicate privately."Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.

I'd say that they should simply close donations to that program then.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostBut what if there is more money in the PEF than they can reasonably use in the next 20 years? Why allow more money to go there when there are real needs for humanitarian or missionary funds (just picking a couple out of the air)?
I agree that money donated under the old slip should stay where directed, but I don't see much of a problem with the new approach."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

I'd also like to lint out that nobody has denied, and there is no evidence to prove otherwise, that the church has spent millions of dollars to support efforts to overthrow south American dictatorships. If I am wrong, feel free to correct me.Originally posted by Rosebud View PostI don't mean to be naive, but I don't know anything about a new expensive bomb shelter under the CCC.
You got that information from a contact? Did I miss a link somewhere earlier in this thread?τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

??? How am I supposed to know? What do you mean "nobody has denied"? Nobody on CUF? Why does that matter? How do you know there's no evidence? Do you mean that none of the 10 people who posted in this thread have provided evidence? Again, why does that matter and what does that prove?Originally posted by All-American View PostI'd also like to lint out that nobody has denied, and there is no evidence to prove otherwise, that the church has spent millions of dollars to support efforts to overthrow south American dictatorships. The point, I think, is that many who have given their money to the church are hoping that some light will be shed in the darkness. That's all. I'm looking forward to the Reuters Article. What's the big deal? This is a farking message board where people discuss inanities and this subject is hardly inane. Where money is spent is pretty critical, don't you think?
I'm also curious about the information Rambam has about a bomb shelter just 'cause I've always thought the tunnels under temple square were curious. I'd occasionally walk through them when I was a little girl. I've been told, too, that there are tunnels under the 'This is the Place' park, but I've never been there and that seems a little far fetched. A bomb shelter isn't an impossibility, though. It just isn't.
