  • Jewish genetic mutation found in Native American tribe

    http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/156382

The article is interesting, but I'll leave it to the real scientists on the board to discuss the implications of these findings.

I had no idea Christopher Columbus was in the BoM! Who knew! Maybe I should have gone to seminary!

Apparently these Indians have some Spaniard ancestry.

No science degree is necessary to ascertain the importance of this to BOM historicity.

I haven't read the cited scholarly article, but I did find it interesting that the group that possesses the gene in question came to the U.S. from Mexico, a place Columbus never visited.

They came to the US 200 years ago; Columbus was > 600 years ago. That's a lot of time from DNA to spread across a relatively small geographic area.

I think the only real take away from this article is that it is now possible for a native group to have some evidence of Jewish ancestry. If it happened here, there could be other evidence out there not yet found. Beyond that, I don't think there's much to say about this news.

Correction. Columbus was > 500 years ago.

That's funny. My history knowledge is as good as Joseph Smiths apparently. I remembered the rhyme as "in 1392, Columbus sailed..." whoops!

To be fair, I might otherwise not remember either but 20 years ago I was present at the quincentennial in Cadiz, Spain.

Asian. This, not the land bridge, explains the Asian DNA.

Bummer that I just missed that and the Expo '92 that was held in Sevilla to celebrate 500 years.
