The changes on campus are pretty astounding since I left in 2005. I was a huge fan of the Soapbox and during the '04 campaign, SSM was starting to be a hot button issue. I'm not a SSM advocate, necessarily (I think each state should be able to decide for itself), but I remember telling the folks at Brigham Square "Get ready for gay marriage because it's going to be a reality.". I got flamed as a fence sitter (quite a true description). In response, I remember one gentleman who said, "we could resolve this by putting all gay people on their own island so we don't have to worry about them" and I went all Godwin's law on him and yelled "throw the Jews into Ghettoes while you're at it!!!". At any rate, only the hippie kids liked what I said and they usually smelled bad.

3. In the late 90's, being a Democrat at BYU was only slightly better than being homosexual. I'm glad to see that homosexuality is now perhaps better tolerated than liberal politics. It always fascinated me that I was viewed as a bleeding-heart liberal at the Y, and when I moved to Tulane, I was viewed as a staunch conservative. Nothing changed in me, just my surroundings. Then I saw the response to Katrina, and the conservative that remained in me died.

4. I am a "Safe Ground Ally" on my campus. I've gotten training to help me help LGBT students find help to problems that they might be having. I've even got a sticker I put on my office door to let them know that my office is a non-judgmental space. I don't call myself 'tolerant' anymore; I'm accepting. I cannot imagine what a sticker like that might do at the Y. All this recent attention gives me hope for change, but until the Brethren respond to the stuff I wrote about in my "Sociology of Knowledge" thread in the Foyer, I doubt that any of this will make even the slightest bit of difference in Church culture.
