"LDS Proxy Marriage Rites Bind Slaves to Slavemasters for Eternity...."

I appreciate Joanna Brooks' work and sometimes agree with her. I think she's quite fair. But that headline to her latest post is atrocious - misleading, unfair, borderline sensationalistic. She ought to re-work it. The post itself makes some thought-provoking points, however.

EDIT: Longer link here, if the above didn't work for you:

The LDS Stasi got to her.

LA, these are the very kinds of absurdities that turn people into atheists. There's nothing wrong with a title that demonstrates the inherant aburdity of an aspect of LDS dogma.

Her post is 100% accurate. That is precisely what a proxy sealing to Thomas Jefferson accomplished.

The net benefit of all this recent attention to proxy work is that the Church will pay more attention to some of these sloppy practices. What moran thought it was good idea to submit Sally Helms as a candidate for temple sealing to Thomas Jefferson? Anne Frank being j-dunked 9 times? There are some glaring clerical and administrative inefficiencies within the House of Order and I believe that we will see them start to tighten the reigns, which is a good thing.

Unfortunately, the Church also faces the near impossible task of policing its members that choose to do genealogy work. I am not sure how much more clear the Church can make it now but some members are still going to rush out and try to use some remote DNA connection to justify their attempt to do proxy work for famous or infamous deceased.

I'm not sure there is a practical solution.

The title is consistent with the contents of the essay. What is the problem?

Jane Elizabeth Manning James was sealed to Joseph Smith thus: "attached as a Servitor for eternity to the prophet Joseph Smith and in this capacity be connected with his family and be obedient to him in all things in the Lord as a faithful Servitor."

Why should she re-work it? Is not the right response: "The Mormon Church needs to undo these acts of racism officially and immediately"?

No, the right response is outrage. It's easier than real change.

While the temple is a wonderful place to meditate, pray, get in touch with inner self.....the (ahem) "processes" of the temple are a complete mess, the topic of this thread included.

I don't see the issue. Factually true and the article itself was pretty mild.

Looks like LA picked the wrong fight...don't you know nobody messes with JoBro?

This highly cynical quote stood out:

Mormonism uniquely emphasizes eternal marriage as a rite necessary to enter the highest levels of heaven. Viewed through this theological prism (and with a generous dose of romantic idealism about the quality of most human marriages), the practice of posthumous sealings has special warmth for LDS people.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

No more atrocious, misleading, unfair and borderline sensationalistic than one that would say the LDS faith sanctions polygamy here on earth in its temples with living members, which it does.
