Besides, given the prevailing attitude towards CES on this board I am not sure if your story is an indictment on the CES guy or your father.

You missed his point entirely. You want to start a new thread in the foyer at least try to start with something topical, insightful, or interesting. Your dad got scammed by a church member? Boo-freaking-hoo. It happens all the time.

Several years ago there were a few church members caught in a multimarketing scheme. Thing is church members are repeatedly told noot to use the church for that purpose and people can get in trouble that way.

My early morning seminary teacher for D&C my junior year was nice but incredibly boring. I think I was concious for about 5% of that year. The horror!

I'll give a CES horror story.

A close friend of the family and a high school buddy of my younger brother decided his calling was to be a Seminary teacher. This friend was adopted from India as a young child by a family from our town. Unfortunately the parents were idiots of the highest order so our friend spent most of his time at our house. He has very little to do with his adoptive parents. Our friend graduated from BYU, married, had a bunch of kids, and taught in Northern Utah County. The guy is a very hard worker, extremely frugal, and had a landscaping/sprinkler installing business in the summer. After several years CES decided to transfer him to Las Vegas.

At the time of the Vegas transfer the housing market in Vegas was going crazy and property values were extremely high. CES did not give him a cost of living increase and as far as I know did not help with moving expenses. (If they did it was a small amount.) Getting into a house stretched his finances very close to the breaking point. He'd been in Vegas for about a year when CES decided that Seminary teachers could not have summer jobs/side businesses. Essentially they took away the income that was making the move feasible.

Things became so serious that my parents did a sort of fundraiser for our friend and gave him the money when we went down for a bowl game. Fortunately a decent amount was collected and a foreclosure was averted.

Just after the fundraiser the housing market went bust in Vegas. Our friend's house easily lost half its value. It was at this time CES decided to transfer him back to Utah. I'm not entirely sure what he did with his Vegas house but he got out of it somehow and made the move. He literally had nothing when he finally settled back in Utah.

My father, who is extremely orthodox LDS, was livid. He did business with the church for most of his corporate life and knew most of the higher ups. Dad, convinced that CES was screwing our friend in a major way, ended up heading up to the COB and raising a lot of hell on his behalf. Until Dad got involved CES wasn't going to do a thing to help our friend. I'm not sure whether Dad's hell raising affected the situation but somehow CES decided they better step up to the plate. My feeling is Dad had something to do with the change of attitude.

Everything worked out in the end and our friend even has his summer business back on track. However most of those who know the situation do not have a lot of warm thoughts for CES.

My CES horror story is a little non-traditional. I attended the Consumer Electronics Show last year in Vegas. It was really crowded and mostly a w.a.s.t.e. of time because all of the cool gaming stuff is debuted at e3 or GDC now. I did attend e3 and gdc and had a fun time, compared to CES, which seemed more focused on showing off the latest high tech washine machines than anything else. It was also very expensive so I decided not to attend this year or in the future.
