Pres. Monson

I had an interesting lunch today with someone close to many who work in the upper levels at Church HQ.

He told me that surprisingly, a number of his friends have told him that Pres. Monson has been MIA. Usually they are quite tight lipped about health issues, but in this case they just don't know if it is a health issue or not--he is just not around. Due to his delayed entry into one of the General Conference sessions last fall due to a health issue, people assume that he is facing a current health crisis of some kind--but this is speculation.

We shall see with the dedication and opening of City Creek later this month what role he plays and how he looks. I hope he is able to fully participate.

Maybe his not being around is affecting the Church's ability to react to this racism mess with anything more than a statement by a mid-level PR employee which could be repudiated or changed later easily.

Apparently there are decisions that are not being made due to Pres. Monson's absence and people in the Church admin and third parties are beginning to get bogged down without the decisions being made.

I pray for Pres. Monson's health and hope he returns soon at full speed.

I'd expect Uchdorf to live to be over 100 years of age. Wouldn't you? As for this succession, I'm sure this Bott mess will be all cleared up if Elder Packer steps into his rightful position as president upon President Monson's passing.

Pres Monson seems like a healthly guy despite his diabetes. I hope that he continues that way as I would prefer to not have to discuss the teachings of a particular successor for a whole year.

I heard Holland speak when I was in the LTM (MTC) in 1977 at a BYU fireside. He was 37 years old if your figures are right. Aside from my oldest daughter's blessing (which I've described in these pages) this was the most memorably rewarding thing I have experienced in an LDS place of worship (in a sense a place of worship, it was in the Marriott Center). He was an amazing orator before being hobbled by the General Conference intonation. He also evinced a tremendous scholarly command of the Bible, including some dazzling Old Testament passages. I really think he inspired me to read the entire Bible cover to cover sparing nary a word while I was on my mission. I have him to thank for that because it had a lasting impact on me (for one thing, I learned that as a literary work the OT stands tall above all other scripture). He's greatly disappointed me since then however.

There were a couple of instances in last GC where Monson displayed some strange mannerisms. I remember one in his Priesthood talk where he kind of shook back and forth, presumably for comic effect. To me, it was kind of disconcerting. I've wondered if he is becoming senile.

Uchtdorf could easily pass for a man in his mid 50s. Although there's been no indication of bad health issues with Holland, you'd have to think that Uchtdorf would outlive based on appearances alone if they mean anything.
