  • Does basketball make Mos a whinier people?

    This is an important topic.

Basketball is a whiny sport and second only to soccer in flop fakery, etc. Does the emphasis on basketball (a court in every wardhouse) make Mormons in America whinier?

No, but it gives us an outlet for our whining.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Since nobody really flops in the church--offensive fouls in pickup ball?--old, overweight guys taking charges?--I say no. But maybe Mormons make basketball a whinier sport. Have you considered this possibility?

Would this not mean that it promotes whining?

I was going to ask if whining about basketball whiners makes Rugby fans seem less manly.

I see no evidence that our basketball courts are even being used. No wardball for adults. Wardball for the youth has been reduced to a three game tournament. No pickup games. Practice for city league or super league teams is officially banned. Good luck to any teenager trying to get in to shoot hoops and practice by himself. The lawyers have taken over.

So sad. Where do you live?

We play ball on Tuesday night and another ward plays on Wednesday. We started getting too many people on Tues. so we started up a special invite group on Thurs, after YM league bball. Stake basketball is played in the same gym on Saturdays. And sometimes I take my kids on a Monday night to shoot hoops (though I hear you'r not supposed to use the church during fam night...oh well). Also, I'm fortunate to have a key now. Just another benefit of expressing to the bishop that I would hate a primary calling and ending up as ward athletic director...er, guy with the keys to the gym.

Of course, it all dies down in the summer, and the courts don't get used very often then.

It is interesting that the "Yes" responses are from Ute fans...

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

It's just something to make us Mormons a little more frustrated. As a group of people we are just to white to be any good. It's like having a bar at a AA meeting.

Well, Jordan had a T called on him, too. Which was fair, IMO. The bad call was calling a foul on Ainge instead of an offensive foul on Jordan for throwing the elbow.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

That is pretty much how our building gets used. Moreover, the Tuesday night pick up games are very intense, bringing in a lot of Non-mos from the area, including a smattering of JuCo players.
                            PLesa excuse the tpyos.
