Is this an unrealistic fear, or am I on to something?

Really? From many conservatives, but especially from BYU Republicans, I would often hear variations on the following themes:
    • I'm fine with helping the poor, and donate a sizable chunk of my income to charitable organizations that help the poor, but I believe this should be a personal choice, and not a government program.
    • Food stamps and welfare make unemployment too comfortable. We therefore need to limit these programs to reasonable periods of time, so that they are bridges to productivity and not lifestyle choices.

Both of these themes result in large populations that live/die/suffer dependeing on access (a regional crapshoot) to private charitable resources (sponsorship).
