  • Every day church in Hong Kong

    http://mormanity.blogspot.com/2012/0...hong-kong.html

While attending church services in the beautiful multistory red-brick building on Hong Kong island where several wards meet, I learned that there are actually church services every day of the week to meet the needs of the large population of foreign housekeepers, mostly from the Philippines, who have only one day a week off, usually a day other than Sunday.
    Cool idea...
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

That branch (or branches, I think there are more than one now) is one of the coolest and most unusual in the church. When I was in Hong Kong, they met in the Causeway Bay building, which was one the island, but not where he was (I assume he was going to the English ward). At the time, it had more active members than any ward in HK, maybe about 150 or so, yet it was still a branch, because there were exactly 2 active men, and all the rest were women.

There are a lot of Filipinos is HK, but the vast majority are housekeepers, so mostly women. The next most common profession is probably a musician in one of the clubs. One of the two active men when I was there was a drummer. At the time, there were always 4 Filipino sisters serving in HK, who didn't learn Chinese at all. They were always the highest baptizing missionaries there.

The branch president at the time was a Senior Missionary. Not sure if that is still the case or not. I was in the ward that met in the same building for about 3 months, and I would stay after my ward and attend this branch whenever I could. They were incredibly friendly and nice people, and for a missionary who had little contact with females, it was pretty fun.
