I'm learning that the description of Sacrament Meeting sounding like a room full of tasered monkeys is most likely pretty accurate. (I've never heard what a tasered monkey sounds like, but I think it's probably a lot like the kid behind me.)Not that, sickos.

Many years ago in our previous ward, after a particularly riotous fast and testimony meeting - our two oldest were about ages 3 and 1 at the time and were, what we felt like, the organizers and vocal leaders of the urchins who made their existence known - our Bishop, a kind, elderly gentleman, stood up and made a comment that was close to this:Originally posted by thesaint258 View PostI'm learning that the description of Sacrament Meeting sounding like a room full of tasered monkeys is most likely pretty accurate. Don't worry about your children being children, because while it may be noisy and sometimes embarrassing to us, the Savior considers it the sweetest music to his ears. The normal stuff doesn't really bother me. Kids will be kids. This kid, though, yelled a lot during the meeting, and I do mean yelled. I could barely hear one of the speakers over him. Kicking the bench didn't help, and throwing a full, metal water bottle over the bench was a bit much. I wanted to ask the mom why she kept giving the water to the kid after it was pretty clear that he just wanted it so that he could throw it.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostMany years ago in our previous ward, after a particularly riotous fast and testimony meeting - our two oldest were about ages 3 and 1 at the time and were, what we felt like, the organizers and vocal leaders of the urchins who made their existence known - our Bishop, a kind, elderly gentleman, stood up and made a comment that was close to this:

I understand what you're saying. There are times when parents need to take their kid to the foyer. I was that parent and it was great.Originally posted by thesaint258 View PostThe normal stuff doesn't really bother me. Kids will be kids. Interesting feature on him on the news tonight. Surprised to find that he is active LDS. More surprised to find that his wife, who is an RM, has left the church. Even more unusual, she is now another christian denomination. You just don't see that with women.

He spoke this past weekend at the monthly fireside my BIL hosts in SoCal, and was reportedly superb. He mentioned a story others here may have heard before but I hadn't and thought it was awesome. He worked originally as a police officer in a small Utah city and one evening pulled over a guy for a traffic violation. The guy gave Bro. Kirby his driver's license along with his temple recommend. Kirby took both back to his patrol car, took down the information and, before handing them back to the guy, wrote "VOID" across the recommend. Kirby got a call from the guy's SP that night rebuking him for doing this. Kirby didn't know why else the guy would have given him his recommend....

He told a story from his cop days in Tooele I think, where someone tried to get out of a speeding ticket by pulling out a TR ('cause they knew that Kirby's boss was the SP). Kirby asked to see the TR, and then either cut it up or told the guy that he had to confiscate it, I can't remember which. Kirby said he got in big trouble for that one, but that it was worth it.Yeah, it's safe to say that others here have heard that one.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostHe spoke this past weekend at the monthly fireside my BIL hosts in SoCal, and was reportedly superb. I enjoyed Kirby's column yesterday concerning whether he would deny his faith if his or a loved one's life depended on his denial. He imagines the following heavenly exchange if he gave his life after refusing to deny the faith:
It reminds me of a comment heard frequently in my youth (from Loren C. Dunn in the Salt Lake Mission Home and again from my MP), "It would be better for you to come home from your mission honorably in a pine box than in disgrace from sexual misconduct." One of them even added the coda, "Certainly your parents would prefer it." Are these absolutist positions with respect to misconduct (I'm thinking also of Maeser's stupid chalk circle) slowly fading away? If so, I'd like to think it's due more to enlightenment than moral compromise. The Lord • "You idiot! Did you even read the New Testament? I let Peter deny me three times and get away with it. Hell, I even promoted him."
Me • "Yeah, sorry. I don't know what I was thinking."
