    Making Fun of Mormonism

I thought this was pretty good.

    http://www.religiondispatches.org/ar..._of_mormonism/

Mormons don’t think on a daily basis about the theology behind their sacred underwear. They don’t pine for their own planets. Such obsession with what Mormons believe, even among America’s literati, belies the fact that Mormonism is foremost a belief system in action. Perhaps a concise summary of Mormon practical divinity comes from the late Church President, Spencer W. Kimball: “As God’s offspring, we have His attributes in us. We are gods in embryo, and thus have an unlimited potential for progress and attainment.” Still, at least according to the dictates of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ (LDS) current leadership, tapping into this unlimited potential takes a fairly workaday form: participating in time-consuming church service, forming heterosexual couples with the purpose of raising faithful Mormon children, and succeeding in the corporate world.

I think that is a great compliment to Mormonism.

no one should be surprised Mormons don't spend much time thinking about their dogma.

People think mormons are weird because mormons believe different things than most and will not talk about it in an open manner. I mean people know about the "magic underwear" but how effective has been the church's response to such things? Ineffective, IMO, because it won't openly discuss them, and information would dispel the mystery and sate a lot of peoples curiosity. The same with the temple stuff. I think a lot of the "weirdness" factor attributed to mormonism stems from the dearth of information.
Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

Mormons are not transparent in discussion of activities.

            Jews are relatively transparent.

The Moonies are not. Scientologists are not. Many cultists are not. It's a reason why Mormons are perceived as cultists and weird.

Why do Mormons have to be open about it? Shouldn't it be enough for others to accept when a Mormon responds that some things are considered sacred?

In a world where everything is discussed, why should non-Mormons accept this answer?

This is the same answer that helped justify the Catholic clergy conceal incidents of sexual abuse. "Secrecy" is not sacred.

It's a little long, but probably a proper relabeling for this forum.

It's an article about how people like Maureen Dowd and Bill Maher are stupid in the way they make fun of Mormonism. It's a positive article about Mormons and Mormonism if you would care to read it.

Why is the Church under any obligation to sate people's curiosity? I'm a little OCD, suffer from social anxiety and have been diagnosed as bi-polar, but when I meet a woman at a bar, I rarely lead with that.
