Someone was posting on Facebook about prayer and it got me thinking. I think prayer is a really good thing. When a person prays, they ideally are stopping in a calm moment, reflecting, and thinking about the big picture. Then vocally or just internally they express their goals, desires, concerns and gratitude. Basically it is a moment where one simply hits pause and sort of recenters around the best parts of themselves.

Lately I have taken to doing some meditating (don't laugh) sitting in my shower/tub with my eyes closed. I find that it also re-centers me, focuses me and relieves my anxiety. I might sit and ponder something I am concerned about or just focus on what I am happy about.

Many of you, obviously, also believe that there are benefits to prayer that do not come from within yourselves. I don't believe that, but I suppose the point of this post is to say that I think I can disagree with believers on that point but share with them the belief that prayer is or can be a really good thing for people.

I've oftened wondered that when questions are answered through prayer how much is the result of working through those problems in your mind and how much is inspiration from God. Is it God helping you or is it just the first chance you've had to really ponder the question and find an answer.

I suspect that depends on the approach. Some people approach prayer with a "I don't have any answers, and I'm going to you to get them." While others take a "I've got my answers, and I just want you to confirm them or give me some kind of sign/feeling if my answers are wrong."

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

The more I read about prayer and consider how we are advised to use it and try to understand its purpose, the more I think it is very, very similar to the concept of meditation in many eastern religions/philosophies.
        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

With the water running? I.e, you're taking a shower? If not, then why sit in the shower/tub?

It just seems like a natural place to be naked.

With water? Seems like it could get drafty.

Nope. You don't get to check that chore off the list just yet.

FTR, I haven't said a personal prayer (as defined by following the Mormondum steps) in over 8 months, although I consider myself a full-prayerer. I spend time conversing with God at quiet times when I wake up and go to bed and also while I workout. My concept of prayer changed a lot a couple years ago, evolving from a thanks/ask to more of a meditative conversation and I've found that I've had more answers recently than in the past. Maybe this is because I no longer see it was a chore or something to check off my list, but I see it as a way to try to understand the spiritual and divine.

I've also had some very distinct answers to prayers, some of which give my a very strong testimony of prayer.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Sounds like we're in the same place in life, although when I feel especially humbled I'll drop to my knees in traditional prayer practice.

My feeling is that to develop a relationship with God, you need to communicate with him in a meaningful way,not unlike you'd like your kids to communicate with you in a meaningful way to further your relationship.

Daily prayer and/or mediation is an important part of my life in order to remain thankful and humbled by my circumstances. But, like you, it takes many unconventional forms.

And apparently I need to take the "they're, their, and there" test again. I am surprised Banana Boy hasn't called me out on that one yet.
