    Being gay and Mormon.

Did anyone here go to this? Looks interesting. I like to joke that there is no such thing as a gay Mormon because they all leave, but (and not just based on this) that appears to be less true than I imagined. But one statistic that jumps out, which I think was from the Trib article on the same event, said that 29% remain active. Hard to think of two more difficult worlds to occupy at the same time.

I have a cousin who is gay and Mormon. He was married (no kids) and is now a professor. He drives two hours to go to the temple twice per week, is divorced and is committed to celibacy. Pretty incredible, really. My ex-bro in law (married my sister) tried to be actively hetero for a decade and just couldn't do it, but not for lack of effort.

I wonder how many gay LDS men are living the straight life in the church.

I once had a conversation with a close gay friend about gay Mormons. He said that there are so many of them that they stand out as their own gay subculture.

I noticed John D spoke. I didn't realize he was considered to be an authority on this particular aspect of Mormonism/ex Mormonism. Is he branching out as part of his core efforts with MoSto?

Sounds like it would have been an interesting seminar.

Has anyone else noticed how few women in the LDS church become lesbians? Not to say it does not happen, I knew a good-looking gal in college who married a non-member hippie guy, experimented with threesomes and wound up leaving him for another woman. However, whenever I see a group of homosexuals in the general population there are more men, but there is a significant number of women. When LDS homosexuals gather it seems they are all men.

I am not seeing that imbalance, but it would be interesting to study. Research has shown that males are more likely to be gay if they have older brothers. It has something to do with hormone levels in the womb. If true, I think one would see more gay males in the LDS population due to large families.

Somehow I ended lup straight in spite of having four older brothers.

Beckstead was in my ward growing up. When he was the Priest Quorum President he spent the better part of a camp out trying to catch me with bottle of Jim Beam I had allegedly brought. There was no bottle and I started the rumour.

I guess having no older brothers would explain my uber maleness.

You have no older brothers who are more masculine in any event.

I can think of few things more sad than giving up your right to love and be loved by an SO y because of a myopic view of sexuality imposed by religion.

This is probably the saddest thing I see in current religious culture. My best friend just came out to his family, and seeing how bravely he fights through the stereotype is extremely inspiring. He loves the church - goes to church every week, goes to the temple, etc. But he is gay. There is no denying that he was born that way. He's tried dating women, even tried dating me, and the entire time I kept thinking, "honey... you don't want me... you want him".

I await in great anticipation the day that the church and the gay community can be at peace with one another. It's going to be a unique situation to handle, gay individuals being active members of the church, but I believe it can happen.
what I am is what I am and I does what I does.

The idea that it is ok to be gay, if you are celibate, is hurtful and a ticket to a lonely life for the gay man or woman. Even worse is the "Love the sinner, hate the sin" phrase that is so common. One of my good friend's father is gay, the story of that family is sad from beginning to end and robbed my friend of the father figure she wanted and needed. I know its anecdotal, but its not unique. It is a travesty and the thought of it makes me sick to the point that I fight for equal rights for homosexuals and have been active locally for that cause, and against the horror that is the WBC in Topeka. It is one of the things that I could not see clearly until I left the mormon church and religion in general. I'm glad I am able to see this issue more clearly now. For those that are able to see it clearly despite religion, you are a step ahead and I hope your voices win out over the hardliners of the mormon church in particular.
