  • Quitting the Church over the Big 12

It seems like a reasonable thing to do. I don't think God cares about our conference affiliation, but unfortunately the Twelve do just enough to muff it.

Seriously, it is a pity that the AD was apparently hand-cuffed. I certainly would have felt a lot better about home teaching if BYU were in a real conference.

The legend of the stab in the back. Hmmm... I've heard that before.

LOL, I have never tied BYU sports to the truefulness of the church.

I'm not sure I would quit the church but I would protest by not attending anymore meetings on Saturday. Being Saturday I think that would send a clear message that Saturday's are meant for big time football and not more church.

God's course is one eternal round. I didn't quit church when I was informed that it was God's will that Nebraska lose to Oklahoma in 1984 so that BYU could ascend to #1 in the polls and deny Tom Osborne another chance at winning a MNC. And one of my fellow BYU students that I home taught back then insisted that BYU would "roll both Oklahoma and Nebraska".

And there's always the possibility that when A&M gave notice to the Big 12 that TCU was the first choice all along. BYU could have been used so that TCU joined the conference on the Big 12's terms. The men in dark suits in the COB might not have muffed anything.

I started that protest long ago. Nebraska-Wisconsin or GPH on a Saturday night? I sacrificed the NFL for Sunday church meetings that seemingly have been numbered as the stars.

I am still trying to convince my wife that it is OK to do church byu71-style: Sneak in late and sit in the back row for Sacrament Meeting, then blow off Sunday School and Priesthood to commune with nature for 18 holes.

You are a better man than I, Gunga Din. I nearly DID quit the church after being told BY MY BISHOP on the way home that it was the Lord's will that Erroll Tucker have TWO touchdowns called back so BYU could win 38-28 in the snow at Cougar Stadium in 1985. (I DID quit listening to that bishop, and we moved shortly thereafter...)

Don't take away his irrational reason for leaving the church.

No doubt. They didn't sacrifice all they did so that their descendants would turn down an opportunity to go back to Missouri and kick ass every other year.
