  • Twitter and Facebook exultant following conference.

I feel completely out of touch.

So many comments such as "Conference was wonderful! It's so great to have a modern prophet!"

I thought conference had some nice messages that reminded us of some timeless gospel truths.

I appreciate President Monson and the leadership. They have tough jobs...jobs that are probably a lot more work than the Toyota Avalons they receive in return. ( )

That being said, I'm not sure anything in this conference goes down as prophetic.

The closest thing I felt approached that was the call to action from Elder Holland last night.

I love Uchtdorf's perspective. He doesn't seem to get bogged down by details. His messages are almost always about practical application of gospel principles. His messages, I believe, could be interesting and useful to members of any stripe, recently departed members, non-members an ex-members. He's generally talking about being a better person and getting to work on an individual scale to make life better for yourself and others.

Overall, I think that conference is really more of a 2 day convention with speakers that talk on gospel topics. That's not bad. But it's not as if the stuff is really any different than what you get at a stake conference, education week, etc. It's just that the messages are given by people regarded as carrying more clout, so they are given greater heed by the membership. It's one thing if your bishop gives a 20 minute discourse on how loving your neighbor is the most important thing and that you need to serve one another. It's a different thing if one of the First Presidency says it.

Maybe the people commenting aren't hearing those basic things in their wards and stakes? I know in my stake, we usually just hear about how great our local leaders are and how we should follow them and never oppose anything they say or do. Rarely do we get anything remotely resembling a gospel themed message. Aristides and I really liked conference precisely because we don't get enough of those basic messages in our ward. But we are hopeful. . . new blood in ward leadership. Now if we could just get the SP replaced!

It's just that the REALLY righteous people get so much out of conference. And if they didn't tell the rest of us, we wouldn't know they were among the REALLY righteous.

Me, I got a little pain out of it. I fell asleep on the floor at the foot of the bed (my wife is washing the sheets) and my 2-year-old decided to wake me up by jumping off the bed onto my stomach.

Here's the best one I can give you, Viking. It's a year old (Oct. 2010). You're better situated than most to assess its accuracy with regards to conditions in Brazil.

Oh, and the prophecy itself wasn't given in General Conference. Instead, we heard about the prophecy in conference from a Seventy. It's unclear to me who gave the prophecy, or exactly when it was uttered.

The living prophet is receiving specific revelations for us. I can remember many times when I have been present to hear one of the servants of the Lord speak about a specific thing for a city or country. I remember at least three of the living prophets, seers, and revelators who have spoken about my country, Brazil. One of these servants said that Brazil would become a great economy in the world and be free of inflation. At the time, we had two-digit inflation every month. It was difficult for many people to believe what the prophet said, but I believed. Brazil has had about 5 percent inflation each year for many consecutive years now. Brazil has become eighth in the world economy, and the country is doing great!

I imagine these are the same people who, in college, would pray over their food at the cafeteria.

I appreciate conference for what it is to me...a chance to hear some good counsel and messages from church leadership and recalibrate a bit until the next conference.

I enjoyed President Utchdorf's talk yesterday afternoon (I think it was afternoon, might have been morning) and thought that there were some great stories shared in the Priesthood session. I appreciate that President Monson usually closes it out with a simple message.

On a different note...I've never seen the Prophet flanked by security the way he was this conference...which makes me wonder if there is a) a health issue there or b) if there was some kind of threat made against him.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Yeah, there were a few "I can't believe conference is over now" on my status feed. Really? Ten hours of church wasn't enough for you this weekend?

Never fear PU; some of us have never gotten much out of conference. I enjoy it, however because my wife is pretty chillre conference, and we both get in plenty of naptime.

How about this one yesterday from Boyd K. Packer?

You must learn to trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not on thine own understanding. You must be trustworthy, and surround yourself with friends who desire to be likewise. Sometimes you might be tempted to think, as I did from time to time in my youth, the way things are going, the world's going to be over - the end of the world's going to come before I can get to where I should be. Not so. You can look forward to doing it right, getting married, having a family, seeing your children, grandchildren, maybe even great-grandchildren. if you will follow these principles, you will be watched over and protected, and you yourself will know, by the promptings of the Holy Ghost, which way to go, for by the power of the Holy Ghost, you may know the truth of all things. I promise you that it will be so, and invoke a blessing upon you, our precious youth, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

                        I liked that.

The world will NOT end anytime soon. Now there's a prophecy I can believe. And he's speaking to the fanatics and idiots there and telling them to quit being crazy -- also good.

In all seriousness, the last one I remember was maybe 1998(?) when GBH told everyone to get their financial houses in order.

We skipped conference altogether and spent about 16 hours between yesterday and today planting 40 shrubs and flower bushes around the side and front of our house, carving out space and placing 30 stone steps around the house, and spreading 5 cubic yards of mulch. It all looks incredible and it was totally exhausting, and it was nice to not feel like I was missing much church-wise this weekend. Next weekend we'll plant 25 trees in the back and spread 23 cubic yards of mulch, but we have 10 teachers and priests from the ward hired to help, so it shouldn't be as exhausting.
