    Fighting HLM in Hawaii

    HLM means "low income housing" to me, but apparently 10 years ago it meant "Homosexual Legal Marriage" and was a big issue in Hawaii. I missed most of the debate, since I was wandering the roads of southern France wearing a nametag and a riding bike that weighed about 55 lbs during most of this time.

    At any rate, the leaked documents are quite interesting. They illustrate, to some degree, the LDS church's involvement in the Hawaii process, although the church takes great pains to stay well within a coalition and behind the scenes (e.g. the decision to contribute monies in ways that don't require reporting - see 5 June 1996 letter).

    The 4 March 1997 letter is a good place to go if you don't have time to read them all. It's a bit of a summary of the efforts and results of years past.

    Hawaii's Future Today's mission statement is specifically geared towards stopping "prostitution, casino gambling, and same-sex marriage" in Hawaii. (21 Nov. 1995 letter) This made me chuckle a little bit, but I haven't decided exactly why.

              Do you mean the links aren't news?

              Or that the topic being red meat for Seattle isn't news?

              I thought the memoranda were interesting, no matter which side of this issue one takes. That kind of information is rare.

                  Thanks for posting. Talk about pulling back the curtain, I had never really put any thought into how church involvement in political issues might look. This is very interesting.
