What apostle would you most like to have a non-alcoholic beer with?

Having lived my adult life as a non-drinker in the midst of heavy-drinking cultures like NYC, London and Oxford I sometimes think abt what type of drinkers my Mormons would be if they were drinkers.

I'm thinking Oaks wld be great. He spent enough time in Chicago and heavy-drinking lawyers that he knows how to hang. Plus, his friend Richard Epstein told me not that long ago that Oaks was known to joke - when he was Pres at BYU and outside scholars come to visit BYU - "I know that asking you guys not to drink for a few days is like asking you not to pee for a few days."

I've driven Elder Uchtdorf places when I was on my mission in Budapest and we once had a McDonald's chocolate fudge sundae together. We also swapped ties which leads me to believe he'd be generous and buy everyone a round. Also being German he's genetically predisposed to hitting some brews.

I really wldn't want to see President Ballard lit up at all - I'm thinking he might be one of those finger-in-the-chest type drinkers if he ever got there.

President Perry wld get right into the sports talk and hug a lot of people.

Eyring: because I think he's the smartest and most influential of the bunch, and over the next 20 years he'll have the most impact of any single person on where the church goes. Would be cool to pick his brain to see how he sees various issues.

Bednar: because I really can't stand him, and maybe having a drink with him would help me see that he's not as bad as I think he is. maybe?

Uctdorf: if you're trying to pick up chicks, would be very useful to have around. Then again, he'd steal the best looking ones. Scratch that.

Yeah it is topics likes this, that make me wish I had the option to hide certain threads. My wife only glances at cuf once ever few months, but I 100% guarantee she will somehow stumble upon this thread. Which will lead, once again, to the discussion of what type of friends I hang out with. Ugh!

With apologies to monkey and the Bish, lightmindedness isn't my motive or underlying feeling here. Living at the intersection of two starkly different worlds thought experiments like this often wander into mind. But now I have some sense for what kind of reaction I'll get if I post this on CB.

I agree with you on Eyring and Uctdorf, and I'd throw in Oaks. But based on the little personal interaction I've had with Bednar, he falls to 15th on the list.
I can barely remember the names of the newest two members, but I've no draw to either of them.

I fully understand why he comes off that way, but imho, he's actually a pretty nice guy.

We have some close mutual acquaintances. I've interacted with him on a number of occasions, though I wouldn't say I know him well. I do know of a couple situations at Ricks/BYUI when he could've lowered the boom, but chose to be sympathetic and encouraging instead.

He also has a very dry sense of humor, so much so that it takes awhile to realize he's joking.

Mainly his hair cut. It was like a buzz with a part.


But seriously, he just seemed like a total hard-ass. He didn't (doesn't) portray the loving representative of God that most of the others do. At least to me. A little while later I found out that one of my good friends was friends with Bednar's son and he told me some stories that went supported the hard-ass image I had of him.

Anyway, I've never met him, so I could be off base. But my initial impression of him hasn't changed much since he was called 8 years ago.
