    Way to go Eagle Scouts!

Although, here are two potential eagle scout projects. One to seal the hydrant and another to unseal them.

I always find the variety of Eagle projects interesting. There are so many things that can be done. And I admit to kind of having a lame project myself - but it is what it is.

As I learn more about scouting and some of their official requirements - it also surprises me sometimes at the projects that get accepted. Not that they didn't require time, leadership, etc. (which is what they are trying to nurture with these projects) but with how the project fits itself.

Just as an example - one of the requirements says that the projects can't benefit scouts or scouting. We've had some accepted and some rejected on this alone. Things like the pinewood derby tracks wouldn't get approved where I come from - because they benefit a scout unit rather than the "community" - but they could sure use a new track.

I did something quite different for my project. We had a very large chapel, quite a bit bigger than most you see built these days, anyway. I (along with my mom) repaired all the hymn books. And there were a lot that were badly in need of repair. We went to the library and talked with their curator, or whoever it is that repairs books, and learned proper methods of fixing the books, depending on what the particular problems were. We even took a couple of books and got the binding re-sewn.

The best rank any of my boys got to was Life, so I didn't have to deal with any 'raising the bar' committee members.

As noted above, I didn't come close to getting my Eagle. Sure, I earned dozens of merit badges and completed many projects for my sons and others but, as PH observed a while back...

PH texted me the following earlier this evening: Texting from the Eagle's Nest--stake center, not Germany, and the view is magnificent.

Man, I haven't thought about my project in years. I coordinated scuba diving teams to do search and rescue patterns to collect trash off the bottom of a popular beach at Lake Mead (Government Wash, for those who are familiar with it). The underwater gear sacks (to hold the trash) were donated by local dive shops, who also agreed to offer discounts on any gear rentals. Since scuba diving excluded most of the folks I knew, I had to advertise in the shops, and had non-divers bag up trash on the beach. To thank them, I convinced several members with boats to make it a ward outing. I'm not sure a project like that could even be approved these days, what with the concern over BSA's liability if someone drowned.
