I don't think there are any Mormons out there who would defend Jeffs. However, I find it troubling that our Church isn't taking more aggressive steps to rid the remnants of polygamy from our scriptures and temples.
Maybe someday our Church will become more open about apologizing for its leaders' mistakes and also for years of revisionist history.
I think that many Mormons are afraid to openly discuss Jeffs in terms of 19th-century Mormonism. (I'm referring to believing, educated Mormons who know a little about LDS history and the age of some of Joseph Smith's wives.) I'm not saying that Joseph Smith was like Warren Jeffs. But sometimes I wonder how much we really understand about Joseph Smith and what kind of person he really was. In any case, I'd wager that Joseph Smith would have been rather unsuccessful in starting a new religion in 21st century America.
