I think you're looking a bit far past the actual intent of my post.

I hope I don't sound out of order here, but a lot of times complicated issues are simple issues hiding under a guise of complicated issues. It seems like she's looking past the mark a little. None of us are expected to know the mysteries of the heavens and earth in order to have a firm testimony and be stoked about Church. Yes, it's simplistic sounding, but faith in Christ and repentance are the base, and that's what will awaken a person spiritually to receive further light. What the Prophet might or might not have done in whatever context (and the general doctrinal sophistication of the Ticos) is not super relevant to that.

She mentioned in passing that maybe she's not praying enough. Do you think she mentioned that because she is not praying regularly or at all, or was it more of a self-effacing comment in the vein of "well maybe I'm just a sinner, but..." A lot of times focus on the complexities leads to neglect of the basics. It reminds me a bit of high school wrestling. When the team was struggling, we would have a practice where we would only work on basic, basic drills because without the basic skill set the advanced moves were worthless... I hope that analogy isn't too ridiculous... Good luck!

I'm not sure what the prayer comment meant. Knowing her, it probably means she's not praying at all, but that's because she's troubled.

She's got a kid living with her who is basically her son. His mom went to work in Italy five years ago, and hasn't come back. She also has a daughter who is 16, and is dating a 22 year old tantasmanos who can't keep them to himself. In June at a dinner we invited them to, this chupamierda just sat in a corner with the girl on his lap and sucked face for four hours. My lips would get chapped if I kissed someone that long. The owner of the house told me after they left if he hadn't been such good friends with the mom, he would've thrown the kid out "por el pescuezo." She's married to an Italian man twice her age who works as a carpenter in Italy all summer, and then spends the winter with her. He just found out he has prostate cancer, and he's been unable to work. She recently found out she's diabetic (type 2, but she's not obese), and her grandparents both died in July.

There's a lot going on. It's friggin' complicated. I feel like maybe I should tell her to take a day and go spend it in the temple, concentrating on how she feels about the Savior, how the Church has blessed her life, and what she should be doing for her daughter. But, I just don't know. Sometimes I wish I had the clarity of being a missionary in these situations. Sometimes.

You don't know if telling her to take some time to thank God in a place of serenity, reflect on the Savior and try and determine what she should be doing for her daughter is a good idea?

I don't think you need the clarity of a missionary with this one dude. Besides, with all that she is going through, what good would introducing her to "The Foyer" do her right now?

Well, I'm not saying that it's a bad idea; how could it be? I'm saying that it might fall to her like a platitude, or something that she could get from someone else. Coming to me with this seems like she's seeking something that she can't really get somewhere else.

And, I don't view the "Foyer" entre comillas, as a bad thing. But, as an educator, I think there's some wisdom in the milk before meat thing that gets mentioned anytime someone broaches the subject of "Deep Doctrine" in the Church.

Really, I think she needs a good hug from someone who loves her. So, given the complications in her life right now, I think I'm going to go with the spiritual side of things; if she responds negatively to that, then I'll re-evaluate.
