I will be in Salt Lake next week and will try to drop in. Some of the topics look interesting.

SeattleUte have you ever actually heard Samuel Brown lecture or read any of his scholarship? Or read ANY books? Do you realize that Oxford University recognized him a a noted scholar? Have you ever heard of Oxford? Are you really calling Stephen Ricks a quack? He knows more about Egyptan history than anyone in the country.

I am really shocked by SU's statement. Painting with broad strokes and dismissing others for difference of opinion on matters of faith is not his usual M.O.

Dan Peterson is still an ass, though.

It's quackery to hold a "symposium" when many of the conclusions have been pre-determined.

It's also par for the course to cherry-pick topics from the ancient world to try to establish ancient roots for LDS beliefs: (e.g. Mesopotamia & Egypt topics), while conveniently discarding any that don't jive with LDS beliefs.

Nobody's saying these guys aren't smart. They have interesting and creative ideas, and are free to pursue them. But their endeavors aren't "scholarship," strictly speaking, despite Peterson's article that trumpets the academic credentials of all the contributors.

            That's the quackish part.

Just a little hair-splitting here: This is a FAIR Conference, not a symposium, and they're pretty transparent about their goals:

The FAIR Conference is an annual event that brings together scholars, apologists, and interested individuals from a variety of areas. Each comes with a unique perspective on history, science, or theology, and all come with a desire to help defend the gospel and share evidences of its truth.

The FAIR Conference is a great way to get informed. This year's conference is geared toward providing the information and answers you need to faithfully deal with the criticisms leveled against the Church and gospel.

Each year we strive to present speakers that address wide-ranging topics. We are in the process of finalizing our speaker lineup, which should be posted here in the near future. We invite you to join us for a frank, thought-provoking, faith-building, and enjoyable experience. Come see what the excitement is all about!

I've never been to one of these things so I can't comment on the tone or ambience or content.

I'm sure this "symposium" would make make my skin crawl from start to finish. I might as well go get a psychological test at that Scientology outlet on my way to yoga. That would make me feel about as good.

You might as well listen to a BYU devotional. Not your cup of tea.

                              Amen.

He's an excellent spokesperson for people who are using apologetics to reinforce their belief that the Church is absolutely true, but is a real stumbling block to people who are earnestly inquiring into the veracity of the Church's claims and would like a pro-Church point of view to balance the anti material they've encountered.

After watching that, it only reinforces my confusion as to why the Mighty Duck series was the last time I recall seeing Emilio Estevez in a feature film.
