That was the last activity my wife and I planed as AC chair(couple?) before we were disbanded. We grilled a bunch of chicken and had coals ready for ward members do their favorite dutch oven dish. It was alot of fun we had board games, volleyball, scavenger hunt for the kids, football and of course capture the flag.

I agree with the most of the comments, and I'm probably restating a lot of what people have already said:
- The adage that if it's everyone's job, it's no one's job certainly applies here. I liked having a dedicated set of people who were in charge of things. It was efficient.
- With that said, our Bishop has been pretty firm on making invidividual auxilliaries/quorums handle certain events. But frankly, there's already enough to do. I don't need more

- Our ward has a fair number of convert baptisms and the AC was a good calling for new to get involved and meeting people. There was a sense they were in charge and responsible for something and it really seemed to work getting them integrated into the ward.
In short, I'm sad it's gone. I'll bet it comes back soon.

You bring up a good point about this being a good calling for new converts.Originally posted by TheAzzuri View PostI agree with the most of the comments, and I'm probably restating a lot of what people have already said:

A bishop can still choose to establish an Activities Committee, right? The church isn't saying that they're not allowed, is it? It's just saying that it's no longer one of the STANDARD committees. Couldn't a bishop choose to establish a committee in his ward if he thinks it's best for the ward?Visca Catalunya Lliure

I recall in my old ward, if there was a convert baptism, it would be scheduled before the pot-luck dinner and was the main event of the get together. Petty much all the (active) ward members would be there. So I guess our AC then had this responsibility as well.Originally posted by TheAzzuri View PostI agree with the most of the comments, and- Our ward has a fair number of convert baptisms and the AC was a good calling for new to get involved and meeting people. I thought I'd update our pancake breakfast activity this past weekend. It came together in the end but it was a disaster. We meet at our stake center but for this activity we used another building which has a large field and picnic tables. Half the food ended up at the stake center. It's about a 15 minute drive. But the sister quickly figured out that it must be elsewhere when she discovered the stake center empty. The RS forgot a few items like butter. Nobody served the food and instead set it up buffet style. This was a bishopric counselor's fault. For some reason he was in a rush to get things started and called for a prayer and things to begin while we were still getting things going. So chaos ensued.
Which leads me to another pet peeve: Why do parents let their young children serve themselves at these kinds of things? I saw kids walking away from the serving lines with mounds of food. Some had half a pack of bacon on their plates. It pisses me off that so many parents show up to these things and just let their kids run wild. It also pisses me off that we were out of bacon before half the ward had even made a plate. And my anger was kindled further when I was cleaning up and tossing virtually untouched plates in to the garbage.
Otherwise, I think everyone ate, and since it was 100˚ and the activities outside involved water, the kids had a good time.
At PEC on Sunday the Bishop thought the way it was organized was not effective. He decided that from here on out each auxiliary will be assigned an activity and they will be the ones to plan and organize the entire event. That auxiliary can call someone as the activity chair to be the main POC and organizer and they can give assignments as necessary to the other auxiliaries. I like this approach and hope it will be much better than what we just had. We'll see how it goes. The next party is the Trunk or Treat and the Primary has been given the assignment."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic
