Which came first? The Baptist or the Mormon?

I had cause to be in a church today. No fault of my own, mind you, but there I was. It was a Baptist Church (1st Baptist to be exact, I believe there are a 2nd and 3rd in town) and I noted there were various phrases painted on the wall. The one that caught my eye was painted on a post right next to the exit. It stated "You are now entering the mission field." I thought y'all had that trademarked or patented or whatever (I'm not real familiar with the applicable law.) Anyway, what gives? Y'all going to let those dirty inbred Baptists get away with this? Or did y'all steal it from those fine southern folk in the first place?

When you looked out the door, at the field, did it look like this?

Cause if it looked like this, I'm pretty sure it was one of ours.

well generally you won't see any phrases painted on the wall in an LDS church. However, I haven't heard the term "mission field" used by another denomination...

No, it was more of a parking lot full of trucks and such.

Of course we invented all this stuff. Why do you think they call us evangelicals?

Thing is, we sort of got caught sleeping on the job. So the Mormons came - as a thief in the night - and commandeered our gig. I'm okay with that, though, as it turns out that that pesky great commission thing is an awful lot of work.

As you probably know, LDS Utahns commonly use "mission field" to refer to any part of the world outside the Wasatch Front. Usage example: "When we were living in the mission field [Arizona], I would eat breakfast with non-members and they would drink coffee right in front of me!"

Where is the "non-mission field" for Baptists? Texas? Mississippi?

Oh, nonono. You've got to think much more exclusively than that. The mission field is anything outside the church walls. So you remind kids that they're heading back to "the mission field" on Monday morning when they head back to the junior high; or it could be your cubicle block at work; or the family reunion; or your neighborhood; or even if you should happen to visit the Second Baptist Church instead of your own First Baptist Church -- that's the mission field, too.

That was the impression I got. As long as I stayed in the physical church I wouldn't be set upon by Baptists. Outside and they would swarm over me like so many bible packing piranhas.

I always found this term to be strange.

And I found it even more strange when the same folks that would refer to everywhere outside of Utah as the "mission field" would also get offended when others would accuse them of living in a "bubble."

That's because the bubble is only the BYU campus.

Gotcha. So the only place that is not the mission field is inside the actual church walls.

                        That made me laugh.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
