Parable: a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.
Welcome to the first annual CUF Parable Writing Contest! The rules of the game are simple:
Example (my entry):
The Lord of Humboldt and the Weed Pinching Dealers
There was a city in SoCal with a reputation for trading the world's most potent strains of marijuana, and people would travel from distant lands to partake of the green bounty.
One day the Lord of Humboldt County, from whose fields much of the marijuana bloomed, decided to descend down upon the SoCal city and see how his product was presented to the people. So, he shaved his beard and washed his hair and put on a clean t-shirt, so that he might slip into the city without being recognized. And thus he met and procured ganja from two dealers.
The first dealer measured out four grams of medical-grade hydro, and as he was bagging it, he took a pinch from the top of one of the buds, and this he kept for himself.
The second dealer measured out four grams of the same hydro, and as he was bagging it, he reached into his supply and took a pinch from the top of one of the buds, a small measure of 'love,' and this he added to the four grams.
When the Lord of Humboldt had observed these things, he changed into a dirty T-Shirt, and both of the pinching dealers could now see who he really was.
"How have you represented my product?"
The first dealer reached into his pocket and produced a wad of bills. "My Lord, I have sold all that you have provided me, and for this I have earned you $550."
With a look of sadness, the second dealer reached into his pocket and produced a wad of bills. "My Lord, I too have sold all that you have provided me, and for this I have earned you $450."
Though he knew the reason for the discrepancy, the Lord of Humboldt asked, "The value of my product was $500. How is it that one has earned more and the other has earned less?"
Now beaming, the first dealer explained, "From each customer, I pinched a tiny piece, too small to notice, and from the many I was able to make one additional sale."
Now looking more abject than before, the second dealer confessed, "I too pinched product, but this I gave freely to the clients as 'love,' to ensure that my offering was not light."
The Lord of Humboldt then said to the first dealer, "You have robbed me! Keep your $550, for you have earned it in your manner, and the money can not be mine."
And then the Lord said unto the second dealer, "You have represented me well, for you have been fair plus 'love.' For this, I will take your $450 dollars and bestow unto you all of my future business. In all things, do your part, then add a pinch of love. This is my way."
Welcome to the first annual CUF Parable Writing Contest! The rules of the game are simple:
- Attempt to write a better parable than anyone else.
- Stick to the form and keep it short! Many of Jesus' parables were just a few verses. Learn from the Master!
- But also keep it fresh. Consider situating it in modern times with modern references.
- And finally, keep the message serious (though the delivery might be humorous). Try to teach a real spiritual and/or moral lesson.
