    Eve

This past week, we had a lesson about Adam and Eve in gospel essentials. My wife teaches the class, but I prepare a little because I am the WML and we never know if our 7 month old will be agreeable.

As I was looking through the topical guide, Adam had quite a bit dedicated to him. When I looked up Eve it said, "see biblical dictionary Eve." So I looked there and found a nice little paragraph about Eve describing her as Adam's wife and her role as our "first parents" and all she had to overcome.

Thinking about it a little more, we don't know a whole lot about Eve. We know that Adam was Michael and was such a valiant spirit in the pre-mortal life, but we don't have that spelled out about Eve. I assume she was at the forefront of everything as well...I mean she'd have to be.

All of this got me thinking about Eve's plight and how she had to partake of the forbidden fruit so that they could multiply and replenish the earth and then once they got to the multiplying, she bore Cain who killed Able...effectively losing two children.

I don't know why it all came together for me on Sunday, but it just struck me that Eve did not have an easy existence here on earth, and is rarely mentioned in the grand scheme of things.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Eve has such a rough time because she is a woman. I'm not kidding. Christianity has incredibly sexist origins, and for most of its existence, women have been treated as property, servants, slaves, concubines, and wombs with appendages. The LDS version is slightly better than the ancient Christian version where Eve is a tool of evil bringing about Adam's disobedience and fall. Women's self-loathing is woven deeply into the ancient foundational story. Joseph Smith's update is a bit of an improvement, but your observation that Eve is missing from much of the story, both on earth and pre-existence, is still typical of the male-centric world that Joseph Smith was in and shaping. We don't know about Eve for the same reason we don't know anything about Heavenly Mother(s) and most of the women in the Bible are footnotes.

And by the way, what role do women play in the BOM? If you had to order scriptures by the presence of women and the depth the scripture goes into their experience wouldn't the order be:

      Old Testament
      * Pearl of Great Price (* a scriptural pamphlet)
      New Testament
      Doctrine & Covenants
      Book of Mormon

God: So, Adam, I am going to make a woman for you. She is going to be great! She will cook, clean, won't complain, always be in the mood......it will be fantastic!

Adam: Wow! That sounds amazing! How much is that going to cost me?

God: Expensive. An arm and a leg.

Adam: Hmm........what can I get for a rib?

If you need quick access to an ironicly-placed rimshot sound to mock your friends, or a genuinely-placed rimshot to put your great joke over the top, you've come to the right place.

HELLLLOOOOO!!!! These are fictional, metaphorical characters. Right? (I thought we established that.)

This is a discussion sort of like, "poor Madame Bovary, so much feeling for life, so sensitive to beautiful things, and trapped in the banality of a marriage to a dull husband and hideously provincial place and time."

The A&E story is a beautiful myth loaded with symbolism and artistry. Let's not sully it with a pretense that these were real events and real charactes. Like Madame Bovary and Santa Clause (LA: Claus?), Adam and eve are imaginary people.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

And sisters have been telling the brethren what to do ever since. Just goes to show they are more in tune........from the very beginning.
