Indeed. As I mentioned to DDD, there is textual support to change 2 Nephi 30 (Joseph Smith made this change in 1840 and it was overlooked in subsequent editions until 1981).

I've only browsed Skousen's book on changes to the Book of Mormon, but I doubt there is the same kind of textual support for other changes to "white and delightsome."

There are a number of questions that are begged....

The issue isn't that the Nephites and Lamanites were racist; the BoM is. The native American origin story it provides just ain't true, and is no less racist than the black origin story in the Bible.

I'm going to play a card here:

I think one of the main themes in the Book of Mormon is the destructiveness and futility of things like ethnic bias (discrimination based on "ites" if you will). I wouldn't mind those passages staying in the text if they were consistenly taught as part of what lead to needless destruction. I wouldn't mind guiding that interpretation in a footnote, either.

Like the idyllic commentary in 4th Nephi where it says there were no manner of -Ites.

I was thinking recently that I miss the old days when Indy would post a link to the Kon-Tiki web site for proof that the Book of Mormon is a historical record.

Thanks for letting me know the story wasn't true. Gosh, you are a big help.

Now, if you assume the BoM was written by the Nephites and Lamanites and Jaredites and Whateverites, then you assume that they were racist in their writings. Why go back and rewrite what they wrote to soften the verbiage? I understand this is a tough thing for the church given the stance on the BoM being the most correct book, but even I can realize that the verbiage in 2 Nephi indicates that the curse was not black skin, but the black skin was a way to indicate those that were cursed. Couple that with the LDS belief that we are punished for our own sins (not those of our parents or other forebearers back to Adam) and the whole thing seems like a moot point.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I think that 4th Nephi can be taught as "what to do" and the violence over "ites" as "what not to do."

Kon-Tiki was a reed boat. That was the whole point.

And that was offered proof of the Book of Mormon? I framed that as potential evidence of a Middle Eastern - New World interaction, not as Book of Mormon historical evidence. AFAIK, there is no reference in the Book of Mormon to reed boat manufacture.

Besides, I didn't realize that Book of Mormon archaeologists were focusing on Lake Titicaca.

That same year, a verse that used “white and delightsome” to describe what will happen to dark-skinned peoples when they repent was changed to “pure and delightsome.”
Oh, so that's how Michael Jackson and Sammy Sosa became white (and delightsome)...
