Oprah and the Nuns

My wife is watching a deal on Oprah about women going into the Sisterhood. They break all ties to family and friends except by letter. One girl is 16. Another barely 18. They claim to be marrying Christ. They vow to never wed or have sexual relations.

This is repulsive to me... Similar to girls beingmarried into polygamy.

where have you (or should I say Oprah?) been for the past two millennia? Nuns entering the order is nothing new, the difference now is that women actually choose to do it instead of being forced to do so by their parents. Just as they choose to enter the order they can choose to leave it if they don't like it.

Right. Just like going on a mission it has some cultish aspects to it (don't everyone lose their minds, I mean that under an academic definition) but it is completely optional. Which is not to say that leaving has no consequences.

At 16? That isn't a woman. It's a girl.

I realize they are no longer forced into, but accepting a 16 year old into that lifestyle is shameful.

If she chooses it and her parents consent then I see no problem with it. It's not like her life is over, she can get out if she wants. In fact, it's not all that hard to get out of a catholic order. You simply tell them you want to leave and the help you make arrangements. I know a few people (both males and females) who have joined orders and then left them.
