Is this an LDS picture?

They are LDS paintings, in that the Church commissioned Harry Anderson to paint them about 50 years ago. However, Harry Anderson was not Mormon. He was actually 7th Day Adventist and rather devout. So much so that he refused to paint anything from the Book of Mormon and relating to the restoration. He would only do biblical paintings for the Church. However, he also painted them according to his own interpretation. For example, the Second Coming picture you referenced originally featured Christ with shorter hair and the angels had wings (Note also that Christ is wearing white). Anyway, since Anderson was not in Utah, the Church had their own LDS artist Grant Romney Clawson to paint over the angels wings and give Christ longer hair. Harry Anderson did a number of paintings for the Church including a mural for the Church at the World's Fair in 1964. This was Christ Ordaining the Apostles which you will recognize.Originally posted by statman View Posthttp://www.posterrevolution.com/gall.../1/544147f.jpg

I'm not really. Though once upon a time all I wanted to do to was be an artist and go to art school. I like to think I am talented. Now most of my work is on a magna doodle for my daughter or on the back of a sacrament program. I remember in Kindergarten my mom was the art teacher who would come once a week with big reproductions teaching our class about art.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostI never knew you were an art historian.
However, the Harry Anderson bit came because on my mission a companion told me about the angels wings. I always dismissed it as Mormon folklore. But after a bit of research I confirmed it was true. Susan Easton Black wrote a pretty good paper about many of the artists responsible for much of LDS art. It's on BYUStudies if you want to read it. Anderson used to get into it doctrinally with Hinckley.
The same companion also claimed that in the Christ in Gethsemane painting by Anderson he painted an angel sustaining/supporting Christ in his agony but like the angels wings was edited out. That I have never been able to confirm but the brush strokes behind Christ kneeling certainly look like they could have covered something."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I guess the haircut Anderson originally gave Jesus was described as Dutch boy.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostI didnt know the part about Grant Romney Clawson. Thanks, Surfah.
Funny how we likes our heavenly men with long hair and our earthly men with short hair.

I had heard that Anderson's original intent was to pain Christ in a crimson-colored robe, per his interpretation of the second coming. The crimson sash was a compromise between the artist and the Church. I suspect it would be difficult to paint over the crimson robe.Originally posted by Surfah View PostThey are LDS paintings, in that the Church commissioned Harry Anderson to paint them about 50 years ago. Now that would have been an LDS interpretation that the church wouldn't have argued with. The crimson sash would still be a compromise.Originally posted by hostile View PostI had heard that Anderson's original intent was to pain Christ in a crimson-colored robe, per his interpretation of the second coming.
