“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
― W.H. Auden
"God made the angels to show His splendour - as He made animals for innocence and plants for their simplicity. But men and women He made to serve Him wittily, in the tangle of their minds."
-- Robert Bolt, A Man for All Seasons
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
--Antoine de Saint-Exupery
In the ward I grew up I had a guy that taught my teenage years Sunday School classes that would always call it "Evilution" boy did people get a kick out of that one.
"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

It is natural for the young and immature mind to think that what to it is new must of necessity be new to the world. Comparatively inexperienced students are discovering from time to time apparent discrepancies between the faith of their fathers and the development of modern thought; and these they are apt to magnify and exaggerate, when as a matter of fact, their great-grandfathers met the same seeming difficulties and yet survived. Believe not those who assert that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is in any way opposed to progress or inconsistent with advancement.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
I realize that this is a thread about Calvin and Hobbs but I've been waiting fir evolution to be discussed on the board for awhile now. I did a search for it and was stunned that nothing came back in the search.
As a biologist, evolution essentially underlies every principle that I studied in college. Needless to say, the study and merger of science and religion was always an interesting process. One thing was for sure though. I always belived the science first. Which is to say that I was trying to stretch the scriptures into the science opposed to squeezing the science into the dogma.
I remember taking ainstitute class while at Utah State about the Pearl of Great Price. In discussing the creation, the instructor spent some significant time talking about evolution. This guy then td the class that the Telestial kingdom was going to be full of liars, adulterers, and scientists.
I td him that me and the Eyrings thought he was an idiot and then walked out.

Seriously? It has been discussed quite a bit. Although I guess a lot of us discussed it a fair amount back on cougarguard. But I am pretty certain there have been quite a few discussions of it on this board too.

It's been discussed yes, but not extensively. Maybe you can link the CG threads and we can go over there and discuss it with Mike.

I think there are plausible explanations to explain the Bible accounts (ie creation, Noah's flood, and tower of Babel/dispersion myth) that disagree with science. "They're not meant to be literal," etc, etc.
What I find to be challenging from an LDS perspective is how to reconcile the points in this talk with science. Other Mormon scripture and teachings of Joseph Smith seem to rely on the literal interpretation of the Bible.
We do not show reverence for the scriptures when we misapply them through faulty interpretation.
Cool article.
"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

That article is about 14 years old. I wonder if we've seen an official 'softening' of this literal interpretation since then? I know there will always be hardliners, but from my perspective, fewer members believe a literal whole earth flood. I'm also noting more who discount a literal interpretation of the tower of Babel.
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."
"You are an intemperate, unscientific poster who makes light of very serious matters.”

Given Elder Eyring's background in the sciences added to the who knows how many years he was able to talk shop with Henry Sr., there's absolutely no way that he subscribes heavily to the evolution camp. I don't know that the church hasn't really spoken out in support of evolutionary theory but it seems like they are no longer talking negatively about it, and that's something of an improvement. I just really can't figure out what is so threatening about the concept. We don't believe in a magician. That was Gob not God. All I know is that if I ever hear someone in church talk about dinosaur bones being put here by Satan, someone is getting a severe talking to.
