This is interesting on so many levels. One of them is that the local leaders could not simply consult their principles and make a decision. .

Maybe this is why a new version of the CHI is coming out soon...

"It's not simple," said Matthieu Chrisner, adviser to the bishop, the leader of the local congregation. Letting people take shelter here "is a very complex decision, and a lot of people would have to agree. It's a chain of authority that reaches the headquarters in the Central Caribbean."

If I had a group of children right now who needed a shelter?

"For now, we can have members of this church and their parents," he replied.

        If they were disabled?

"I would have to ask at another level," Chrisner said. "There is a committee. Really, it's a committee inside of some other committees. It goes through the bishop, then a committee process ... then, there's no way to know if it's longer or shorter. I can't tell you how long it would take for an answer."

This is all due to the new "members voluntarily clean the building" policy. Seriously, would you want to clean that building after it was used as a shelter for 200 people?
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Stuff like this reaffirms the feeling that religious institutions are affiliated with deity in name only.

Wow, way to focus on the actions of one bishop and not the enormous amount of aid and help the church sent.

                Come on. That's not fair.

Word. In my (admittedly modest) experience on the other side of Hispaniola, the church is far and away the most widespread and effective provider of aid, humanitarian and otherwise. I'd feel safe assuming that this is so in most of Central/South America.

This one unfortunate story in no way undermines the real humanitarian effort the Church puts forth worldwide.

It is not fair, but it still makes me ill inside. I don't fault the bishop for following the policy. The policy is one that a corporation would make to protect their interests/property. Does the policy embody the teachings of Christ? Does it align with the words and actions of Jesus? Or does it "draw near me with their lips, but are far from me in their hearts"(I know I butchered it)

It is not the people that the church needs to please.

That's fine, but you took a fairly isolated incident and generalized a whole population. You know better than that.

My comment was aimed at the operating bodies, not the people within them.

I wouldn't call it isolated as well. Similar comments were made about the distribution of aid following a series of mudslides in central America(I will get specifics in the morning)
