Done by tradition and for aesthetic reasons mostly. Sure it leads to less HIV transmission in Africa and fewer cases of penile cancer, but we don't live in Africa and penile cancer is rare. Phimosis is a bitch but can be prevented with good hygiene.
I think it is kind of dumb. To me it is somewhere between piercing a newborn girl's ears or giving that newborn girl a prophylactic mastectomy.Comment

I don't care how rare penile cancer is as this is something I'd take great pains to avoid completely. Circucision may be the pointless and costly religious practice that is hardest to discard.
By the way, not only is penile cancer rare, there has been no causal link established. Utah has an unusually high rate of prostate cancer, particularly among LDS. Does abstinance from sex cause that? Maybe circumcision does.

The husband of the couple that introduced me to Gidget is a urologist and he has performed many circumcisions on adult males. Maybe if get up the courage, I'll ask a friend of mine. I know her husband is intact (because he is one of our closest friends and is European. I consulted him before deciding not to circumcise our oldest), but my guess is that her Utah-raised ex-husband is circumcised. I'm curious which one is better.
