Well, given that in the next paragraph he explicitly speaks out against marrying outside of one's race as a general rule, and given that you don't have to be Mexican to live in Mexico or Tongan to live in Tonga, your interpretation is weak, at best.

If you ignore his express counsel against marrying outside of one's race, then I would say you may be onto something.

That guy never ceases to amaze. In Krackauer's book he made some comment about how even the modern church frowns upon interracial marriage. When I read that I wondered where in the world he got that idea from. Apparently he's friends with Packer.

When I was 18 I had a girlfriend that was not caucasian. When I brought her home I remember the look of horror in my mother's face. I can only imagine she was contemplating the prospect of little, brown grandchildren. She's the sweetest woman in the world, but she was a product of her generation. That's why I tend to cut the brethren some slack on this one.

I actually had to teach this lesson. It was one of those times I came away telling myself: "I just can't do this anymore..."

I ended up essentially saying that I don't think this was true anymore and that the suggestion is really to find and marry someone who is similar to you culturally, regardless of your skin color.

If I had to teach that lesson today, I'd just skip that part or the lesson entirely. Or ask the YM's president to assign it to someone that was comfortable with teaching racist ideas.

To be honest, I don't see too much wrong about that quote. I will give my children basically the same advice. Marriage is tough enough as it is. But in the end, they're free to love and be committed to whomever they choose.

This must have been the lesson my brother was referring to. I called him up to ask him and he said it happened in Deacons Quorum where he was with his son who is a product of a "mixed" marriage, (is that an OK term to say). He did say the offensive quote in the manual was quoting some GA from 20 years ago.

I now have 7 grandchildren who are products of mixed marriages. They are the love of my life, along with the grandchildren from the non-mixed marriages.

There are so many things that are valid that the brethern said 40,30, 20 and even 100 years ago. I think we should dwell on those things and not the stuff that in hindsight was just culture and not teachings from God.

I can clearly recall the crap the two bi-racial kids in my high school class got for their mixed heritage. That was in the early 80s.
