What was the HRC petition about?

I liked the response by Michael Otterson. He did a nice job emphasizing the importance of kindness and love and stayed positive while addressing a pretty sensitive issue.

The church just needs to ignore this until it goes away. Stop giving conference talks defending their position. Stop addressing petitions. Unless the PR wonks are telling them this is good for church, ie we lose with college educated people but win with rednecks for net win.

I found that to be a well crafted statement.

I wish it could be followed up by Elder Packer saying, to church members, this is what I meant to say.

So you are prejudiced against rednecks?

Those with the spirit heard that message in Packer's talk.

As long as they're straight rednecks, it's OK I reckon.

I know it is my fault. Whenever Elder Packer begins a talk, me and the spirit have a real debate on whether the spirit is going to stick around and listen or not.

No, I'm just throwing out some assumptions PR honks might make in a model to evaluate the whole gay hate thing. Rednecks, high school dropouts, homophobes, the highly religious. That's the group all this will appeal to. Oh, it's all the same group, lol.

ps I'm just goofing. I really don't have a strong opinion on this whole matter other than I wish it would go away.

That's a great improvement over Packer's attempt, but the second half rings quite hollow. For one thing, there are several references to those who are attracted to others of the same sex or who have "feelings or inclinations" (and another strange reference to those in the church who are attracted to someone in particular of the same sex), but zero references to members of the church who are homosexual. I know I make note of this a lot, but it's so consistent that it can't be a coincidence.

It also mentions that the aforementioned can still "receive all the blessings afforded to those who live the commandments of God," but this goes against the doctrine of the highest degree of celestial glory, unless they're counting on these folks getting another shot at marriage after their gayness is removed in the resurrection, which would be a new and disturbing doctrine.

Still, it is a decent statement that I wish more members of the church would live by.

That's a vast improvement over the Packer talk. I hope it will stem some of the bloodletting and the hate speech.

Would that really be new and/or disturbing?
