  • Farmer dies after sending exhausted son on errand.

Point is to always obey parents may be last chance. Who always obeyed there parents without grumbling? Always did there chores. If last memory was argument should you live with that guilt all your life?

Versions of story one was after stacking hay all day exhausted and hungry then saw Dad weary so told him to walk two and a half miles to town to get part. Didn’t grumble but did what he was told got home no one was doing chores but at house. Dad died of heart attack during his absence. Saw Dads exhaustion too. Glad he didn’t grumble and did last request in moment of sorrow. Hoyt Brewster defining moments quoting I think John Vandeberg in presiding bishopric told story.

Another story in Vaughn J. Featherstone book on youth glad to get last bale of hay loaded so he could relax was exhausted. Dad asked him I hate to do this but could you go to town and get part so we can plow north field tommorrow. Saw father not doing well when he returned two hours later surprised to see Bishop and neighbors at home and learned Father died of heart attack during his absence. Same result glad he fulfilled last request.

Set in 50’s or 60’s story. If true was it 3rd crop hay and grain was done? Because what field would need plowed next day? And if they had livestock wouldn’t they use that for winter grazing or burn stubble? And what implement store would be open that late? Some may be open late at night. But would falling asleep be bigger problem?

Maybe point of story was even when tired and hungry obey your parents because you may never get another chance. Did dad like to order people around himself? Chicken soup for soul story.

Especially for Mormons are full of stories were someone dies to get point across. The bridge story where father sacrifices son for passengers. How did kid get on tracks in 1st place and could God of saved them both? Bill died saving siblings from fire and nephews and nieces irreverent on grave years later were that way being irreverent during sacrament meeting.

Robert Millett in talk on testimony had morbid seminary class, manufacturing tears. What’s the hang up with death, thinking that was a way to get the spirit. I don’t know if that story about farmers son getting part and father dying is true or not or parable, but is it necessary to use morbid stories to get your points across? That is what they are doing.
