  • In a ranking of decisions made throughout the church's history from good to bad, this fits somewhere in between the decision to (allegedly) conclusively deal with the Baker-Fancher Party and the decision to enter into negotiations with Mark Hoffman to acquire church historical memorabilia.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

      • My brother made the comment that his wife, who rarely criticizes anything, thought the names were bad. He said "since I've known her, the only thing she's ever said were bad were Hitler, 9/11 and dog diarrhea."

I saw a BYU coed gush about how inspired the names were and how it was a wonderful time to be a Young Woman. The young women in my house think they're kind of dumb.

            From my Elder’s Quorum Prez:

“Like it is for many, this was another change that was difficult to want to accept (I still miss the priesthood session of conference to which I was hoping to take my son), but having three girls who will each go through these age groups, I’ve had some really moving impressions that the group names will have a profound impact on them—helping them shape their identity as daughters of God and sense their progression as they prepare for sacred temple covenants. Convenient names, these are not, but I believe the Lord is behind them.”

Yep, there are just enough of these thoughts going around--almost always from stake or high-level ward leaders--that the narrative is very quickly going to become "we need to embrace these titles for the sake of the young women, lest they think we don't support them like we do the young men." Which is dumb, as the very reason I hate these names is because I support the young women like I do the young men.

We should hope and pray that group names, selected and chosen by someone else, do not help shape our daughter's identities. I would sincerely hope that the young women we are responsible for would be made of sterner stuff than to be swayed, one way or another, by the name of a group.

I don't think we need to embrace the titles for the sake of the YW or anything else. I simply think that "Builders", "Messengers", and "Gatherers" are better names than "Beehives", "MIA Maids", and "Laurels". Also better than "12 and 13 year old young women's class", etc.

I never knew what a Mia Maid is.

Weeknight activity for youth used to be called "Mutual". It came from an older program called the "Mutual Improvement Association" or MIA. It came from that.

I am certainly old enough to have gone to mutual. But I wasn't aware of the Association!
