BYU matters as divinely inspired decisions by Q of 12

This post on CB brings up an interesting point to me.

    http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/...tml?id=5864385

The gist of it is that BYU going independent was a divinely inspired decision made by the brethren.

Whether or not you believe this shouldn't depend on whether you're a BYU fan or Utah fan or neither.

A mullah should believe it to be true, regardless of school affiliation. The brethren did make the final decision. The stated reason is to provide more visibility to BYU and the church and further the work of the kingdom of God.

ALUF's refuse to even entertain the possibility of this and quickly get to mocking BYU fans without thinking through the logic.

I suspect most BYU fans believe it, though many (including the cool BYU fans on this board) are afraid to admit it publicly because it doesn't look very progressive to state that God's involved with the BYU football program.

I used to believe that all decisions and teachings made by the brethren were inspired of God ranging in all spectrums: declarations not to watch rated R movies, get a tattoo, or have oral sex with your wife, the Missionary Guide as a teaching tool for missionaries, downtown SLC real estate development, MoTab choir, decisions relating to BYU, etc. I don't anymore. But that has to do with my own personal testimony of the prophet and apostles, not to do with my status as a BYU fan.

My assertion on this is that if you're a faithful, believing LDS, you should believe this decision was inspired by God, regardless whether you're a BYU or Utah fan.

Non-Mormon, Apostate, or non-believing or non-traditionally believing LDS Ute fans, go ahead and mock BYU fans. ALUF's: go ahead and mock BYU fans but you should continue hating yourself for it.

I would like to point out that the lack of financial or competitive success of this venture doesn't mean that it wasn't an inspired decision. We are not privy to Divine Metrics.

I thinks it's a bit silly to believe that this was any more divinely inspired than Notre Dame's contract with NBC.

Apparently the BOT gave Holmoe and Samuelson authority to do what they thought was best for the program. I doubt this is something that the Q12 was driving. Could Holmoe and Samuelson have been inspired? Could ESPN? I suppose they could have.

Please don't forget the possibility of divine intervention resulting in Thompson continuing to be Thompson.

The bottom line is that 15 prophets, seers, and revelators met and prayed together and approved the decision for BYU FB to go independent.

Whether you think the decision is divinely inspired has more to do with how you feel about those 15 men than what you think about BYU FB.

Similarly, great financial success doesnt mean it WAS inspired. I am going to focus on my own inpsitration and not worry so much about Tom Holmoe's inspiration.

I think it has more to do with what one thinks about the nature of man's day-to-day relationship with God.

Are you trolling? How do you know why they met and how they decided or what they said? Maybe they said "We don't care, Tom, do what you think is best for the university." I think your position here may reflect your own thoughts about the amount of inspiration invovled, but nothing you are saying sheds any light on what the 12 said or decided.

It was either divinely inspired or it just isn't that big of a deal to God.

                  I'll go with the latter.

It certainly isn't some golden spike in his eternal plan that hold everything together any more than is my choice of breakfasts this morning.

Link? How do you know that happened? We know that the BOT met. I'm sure they prayed, but there are a mere 6 seers among that group

But it doesn't have much to do with how I feel about those men. It has more to do with whether I believe that everything they say and do is revealed to them from the Lord or whether I believe them when they say that it is not. I believe them. So I work with the assumption that we are not dealing with revelation unless they say so.

As an ALUF I will bite on this thread...

I do not doubt that the powers that be feel that getting more exposure for BYU football (albeit at the argueable stance of less exposure for all of the other sports - please do not bring up the more TV sets available for sports on BYU-TV vs. CBSSports, etc.) will some how bring more converts to the church. I do understand the thought that more exposure, especially along the East coast, might open doors to missionaries.

Now as far as inspiration goes, I would allow for the contingent that the leaders used their experience and knowledge to make an informed decision, then prayed about it for confirmation, and did not receive a negative reply (i.e. stupor of thought)... so they feel that the decision was inspired. I have no problem with this analogy or rationale.

In the same vain, I would also argue that the Utah to the PAC12 gives Mormonism as much exposure or more becuase of the large contingent of mormons coachs, players, students, etc. So Chris Hill must be as inspired of God as Tom Holmoe.

Or maybe the brethren decided they didn't want the Utes being only "exposure" others would have to the Church
